Be True Indians (Poem)
A Great Nationalist's Thought
“The aim of life is no more to control the mind, but to develop it harmoniously; not to achieve salvation here after, but to make the best use of it here below; and not to realise truth, beauty and good only in contemplation, but also in the actual experience of daily life; social progress depends not upon the ennoblement of the few but on the enrichment of democracy; universal brotherhood can be achieved only when there is an equality of opportunity - of opportunity in the social, political and individual life.— from Bhagat Singh's prison diary, p. 124”
― Bhagat Singh, The Jail Notebook And Other Writings
Indian Tricolor held High
India Freed on 15th August, 1947
Patriots freed India from the Englishmen
Independence they gifted to their countrymen
The midnight of 14th August, 1947
Brought hope for each and every Indian.
While the sun rose on 15th August, 1947
India stepped into an era free of chain
Citizens felt very bright
Had no more fright
No pity at one’s own plight
Only a wish to prove India’s might.
The Indian flag soared up high
While the British flag rolled down in shy.
Indians when saluted the horizontal tricolour
Of saffron, white and green
With a navy blue wheel placed at the centre
Every Indian then felt like a proud citizen.
Freedom Struggle was a tough ride
Unlimited sacrifices were made
With and even without bloodshed
The independence, our birthright, we achieved
With a wish which every Indian's heart had
Let India and the Indians never fade
Keeping unity in diversity intact as India’s pride.
Since 1947 India has come a long way
Leaving behind the tales of her freedom
Marching towards a new height every day
But the facts of independence hold a certain charm.
Respect for the Indian freedom fighters
Be they the famous or unsung heroes
Kept always at high
As they then guarded Indian heritage without a sigh.
No more under British control
Still, Indians are captive in their own nation
As nasty politics, violence and corruption
Play major roles
That’s how every innocent Indian
Gets trapped and exploited by their fellow country men.
Everyone understands
But some chooses to be mute
Some are afraid to protest
Some lacks
The courage to highlight the demerits
While some people happily follows
Wrong path set by our own detractors.
Independence is to be enjoyed
And never to be exploited
Freedom is to be protected
And never to be harmed
May all the citizens
Become the true Indians
As it’s time again
To stand up for the country
Make no folly
Rather wipe out the follies of the countrymen
India will then be a peaceful, secured and pure haven.
