Billybuc Photo Challenge Prompt: Installment 1

Updated on January 15, 2020

Who Gets the Credit for This

My old HP friend Sha is to blame for this new series. I’ll let her explain it in a comment she left on the last Mailbag I posted:

“Now for the question I promised in a comment to a previous post and I'll preface it by saying I'd like to get back in the writing groove in 2020. I've been MIA since I went back to work five years ago. Holy Mackerel! Five years ago???

“Back in 2013, you frequently posted contests or challenges based on picture prompts. My muse found those very motivating. She apparently loves a visual that jump starts her creative juices. I know other writers enjoyed your picture prompt challenges as well. They really helped your fellow writers spread their wings and fly.

“So, my question is this: will you consider bringing back your picture prompt challenges? They don't even have to be contests, just something to help your fellow writers exercise their creativity. I know you're really busy with your new writing endeavors, downsizing, etc. So, how about one or two challenges per month?

“What say you, my friend?”

Sha knows I won’t deny her, so here we are and here we go.

Follow the Instructions

The picture prompts for your fictional short story can be found below. They must be used in the order that they appear, from top to bottom.

Each story must be a minimum of 1000 words in length.

I wish you all luck, and I hope you have fun accepting the challenge.

The Photo Prompts

The photos/prompts can be found below. Each scene must be described, in some way, in your story, and, as mentioned earlier, they must be used in the order they appear.

I’m sorry, but there are no prizes for this challenge, but I do wish you all the best of luck. Have fun! And if you feel like it, please email me a copy at holland1145@yahoo.com so I can see what you’ve done.

It's never too late, Genna. I would love it if you wrote that poem, and I look forward to it. Just reading your thoughts in your comment makes me hungry for your poetry.

Be safe my friend, and hurry up with that poem, please.

      Hi Bill...

I was struck with the beauty of these images, the meaning of home and how our memories can be like photographs -- reflections in diminishing moments of time that capture what we had, as it once was. Our perception of time has always fascinated me.

When I begin to write a poem, the demands of work and daily life often cause me to store away the words in the alcoves of my imagination where I sense them scuttling about in hiding, kinda like squirrels in the attic. :-)

My apologies, but I was wondering if it was too late for me to write a poem about a few of these images.

I decided I did have another story in me and that I would try flash fiction this time. It is only JUST published so won't be checked by them for up to 48 hours! Your pictures are great prompts to get the old brain working.

Hmm, not sure whether I have another story in me at the moment but these are great challenges and certainly prompt me to think of stories that fit them. I have the feeling that writers are always making stories about things they see, so this is a great way to prompt more story telling, when we see novel things and places.

Once I sat down it just rolled onto the keyboard - strange how that happens if you give your muse the reins!

Thanks for setting this challenge, bill. It was fun to do.

What a great challenge! I have now read two stories spurred on by your photo challenge. They were both excellent. I see in the comments that there are more. You must have had fun deciding upon which photos to use and could probably come up with a great story of your own. Have you thought about doing that?

    • billybuc profile imageAUTHOR

      Bill Holland

No rules, Zulma. Write about one or incorporate them all....1000 words or 500 or whatever. They are just pictures to kick start your imagination.

Have fun with it and have a great weekend!

It's good to see the picture prompt back again. I could do with some clarification, however.

Are we to write one story incorporating these five photos in the order they appear? Or is it one story per photo in the order they appear? If the latter, must the stories appear in the same hub or can you post a 1000 word story individually?

I've got an idea for at least one photo which I've roughed out but need to understand the ground rules.

Thank, Bill. Have a good day.

I wrote and posted my response to your challenge tonight, Bill. It has to go thru QAP before it's sent to your notifications.

I had a problem uploading your last three photos. I just upgraded to Windows 10 because Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Your last three photos came thru as a web page extension and not a jpg. Anyway, I figured it out. (Hate Widows 10. It's very un-user-friendly).

My article should show up in your notifications in the next day or two. Looking forward to your critique, as I've gotten rusty over the past few years.

This looks interesting. I may be able to respond, but forgive me if I don't. Right now I'm busier than a one-legged a$$ kicker getting my taxes ready, finishing up a project, and trying to get my bathroom remodeled because of emergency plumbing repairs. We're stumbling over everything sitting out in the bathroom and the hallway, and all the plumbing still hasn't been replaced. By the way, I love the photos, especially the cemetery and the creek. They remind me of Arkansas.
