Billybuc's Second Creative Writing Contest

THE RULES

A few months ago I held the first annual Billybuc Writing Contest and the entries were fantastic. Now it is time for the 2nd Annual Contest even though it is still the first year. I know that is nonsense but hey, it’s my contest so what I say goes, right?

The basic idea is to write a creative essay of no more than 1,000 words using the pictures you see on the right as prompts. There are four pictures and you must use them in sequence from top to bottom. If you go out of sequence you will be disqualified and no, you may not add pictures of your own. You choose the subject matter of your short story; it can be any genre. The only requirement is that it follow the picture prompts.

The deadline for entries is May 1st. At 12:00 a.m. May 2nd the deadline will have passed and you will be out of luck.

Yes you may publish your stories as a separate article on HubPages or any other site you choose. I do not have any ownership of your work and I have no desire to steal your work like so many other would-be writers out there lurking on the internet.

To review:

  • 1,000 words or less
  • Must follow four picture prompts in order
  • Deadline May 1, 2013

AND THE WINNER IS…..

So, what do you win? The same thing the last winner, Bravewarrior won, an autographed copy of my novel “The 12/59 Shuttle From Yesterday To Today.” At a retail value of $14.95 this is a great deal, but once I become famous, this autographed copy could be worth thousands of dollars. If you win I would suggest reading the book and then putting it in a safe deposit box for protection against possible theft. J

So that’s it. Email your entries in Word format to holland1145@yahoo.com and please put “Contest Entry” in the subject line of the email or I will not open your email.

Also, if you write for HubPages, please make sure you tell me your Hub name. :)

Good luck to all and thank you for taking part in this fun writing exercise.

2013 William D. Holland (aka billybuc)

Okay I had to vote up and interesting because funny didn't fit. Fun would but then we don't have that option. What a great idea and hopefully a tradition you will carry on. Once I have finished with the Apprentice Program I will be looking forward to another contests. I love the pictures in this one though, you really know how to get the old mind juices flowing my friend. Oh well, good luck with the contest and have a good week.

Bill, I may give this a shot just for the exercise. I will immediately disqualify myself since I won the last one. Or maybe I'll stick to the Artistry with Words prompts. I'm enjoying them. Who knows.... it's Monday and has been raining for 3 days so my decision making process is a little off kilter.

Good luck hubbers! Really try for the win. Bill's book is awesome!

Hi Billy! I've been like a pogo stick lately, my calendar is loaded...just want to confirm that you want fiction...you wrote 'essay' so I thought maybe you meant non-fiction??

Then you mention 'short story'....this is in case I decide to give it a shot.

I love contests, I'll just have to see if I can keep up with the clock.

That being said, you just are incredible with the way you interact with the people on Hub Pages...and how you encourage us to keep the writing juices flowing. Blessings, Sparklea :)

PS: So you want ONE write-up with the picture topics in sequence making it one story? Correct? Just confirming :)

Hi, Bill...I was about to ask a question when I looked above and noticed that Sparklea already asked it. Please clarify whether the contest requires an essay or a short story. Thanks!

Hi Lea! Sorry for the confusion. This can be a short-story or an essay. I don't care which. The only requirement is that it follow the prompts in order. This can be any genre...poetry is allowed.. :)Fiction or non-fiction is allowed. Your creativity will be appreciated and applauded.

Thank you my friend and good luck.

Ah, Bill you do inspire. I love it. I'll see what I can do because I'm also battling that 30 poem/30 day challenge. We'll see I may get inspired. I will tell you that these pics are harder to write about than the last ones at least to my way of thinking. Passing this on to my other followers.

Jaye, answered above...fiction or non-fiction, essay or short story...makes no difference as long as the prompts are followed in order.

You can count me in, Bill! Of course, I don't know that I can address an envelope in 1,000 word or less. I used to think 500 word themes were the cruelest cut. I'll give it the old college try, though!

As always, I'm admiring your ability to inspire and encourage others. What a truly important gift (and skill -- I know it takes tremendous effort and energy, no matter how easy you make it look).

      Hi Sir Bill

So you're talking nonsense, about time as I was beginning to think we were on different levels.

I saw reference to pictures and robbers and thought you were looking plans for another art heist and then saw something about creative writing so obviously you weren't talking to me.

Are you working with a new crew. Have I been sacked. Are we done fencing.

Another thing you didn't mention was whether or not you were flying the winner first class to the book signing ceremony. It's the small details that get you every time.

I Googled creative writing and the P1 slot said "Not You", so I'm putting together a brief to sue Mr. G for discrimination.

1 year and 1 week to write 1000 words. You know I think I might manage that.

Last point is "Why don't you want to steal my work?" I mean if your friends won't steal your work, what chance have you on the big old WWW.

If you're giving me discount on the entry fee I might just have a go at this.

      MJ.

MJ, because we such close chaps, I'll wave the entry fee for you. No, please, don't try to thank me. It's the least I can do for you my friend. You have inspired me over the past few months to actually lift the hood on my car and look at the engine, so the least I can do for you is let you enter this contest for free.

Bill, I am taking a break from staring at a 39 page act that I am editing, so what do I pick to read but your hub on a writing contest. Anyway, I read your rules and thought to myself, sometimes I have trouble keeping my comments to 1000 words and it is daunting some people? Anyway, today 39 pages and my mind is as deflated as a flat tire. Jumpin Jehosaphat! Good luck with your contest! Maybe I'll recouperate and think about it. Luv ya. Bye!
