CONTINUATION OF THE LAKE...by b. Malin
THIRD INSTALLMENT...
They went back to the cottage the following weekend. Carter had the Lease Papers ready for them. Mr. Terrance L. Jordan had signed them, and through Carter, had wished them a Happy Spring-Summer season on the lake. Carter handed Robert the keys to the cottage and the boat house, and told them that the local cleaning crew would be by during the week to freshen things up a bit...it was included in the lease. "You people can move in by next weekend, right on your May 1st schedule" he said as he led the way to the front door.
The week literally flew by and now it was Thursday, and Sarah had been up most of the night throwing up, so she and Robert, who had taken the day off, were now driving to her Doctor. "I'm sure it's past she said, smiling up at him...maybe I'm just too excited about the cottage, and moving there from May to Labor Day". "I don't know honey, you still look pretty green". Robert replied back as he pulled into the parking lot. Dr. Green saw them as soon as Sarah signed in. He knew she wouldn't have wanted to see him just for the hell of it. Robert stood by Sarah's side as he examined her. "Well my dear" he said smiling as he removed his surgical glove. "There's nothing wrong with you... he said as he cleared his throat, you're pregnant, and I'd estimate about two months along...Don't you keep track of your periods"? "Oh my God, I'm pregnant Robert..we're going to have a baby"! "I know, I know" he replied trying to act excited, for they had planned to wait until after the summer to try. Oh what the hell, he thought to himself, really what difference does it make? Now Dr. Green was speaking, "Sarah, I want you to come back tomorrow...just to make sure you're feeling ok and I'd like to go over some standard procedures... Beth at the reception desk will take care of time with you." Then he smiled warmly at both of them, shook Robert's hand and left the room. They decided to have dinner out that night to celebrate and later they made soft gentle love. "Are you sure this is alright to do"? Robert kept saying to her as the heat of passion set in. "Oh yes, oh yes, she replied back, I'm pregnant not dying...I love you Robert, I love you Sarah"...and then they became two souls intertwining and beating as one.
Robert was waiting the the reception room of Doctor Green's office and grabbed his wife from behind, as she entered the room. "Oh Robert, she laughed, you scared me, but what a pleasant surprise, what are you doing here this time of day"? He pretended to double check his Rolex watch. It was three thirty on Friday, the last day in April. "I've got a surprise for you, my gorgeous, pregnant and sexy wife. While you were seeing Dr. Green, Maddie, our maid and I were home packing. The car is loaded up with all our suitcases, and you and I can leave to go to our country home." Having said that, he extended his arm as he went to open the office door. "Your chauffeur awaits your command my lady." "Oh Robert, she giggled, I love you so very much and I don't know when I've ever felt so happy...sometimes I think we are too good to be true". For a moment Sarah felt depressed and thought to herself, what made me say such a silly thing. She shrugged it off, as she and Robert literally skipped down the Doctor's front steps to where the Cadillac Escalade stood parked, loaded to the gills.
The ride out of the city was comfortable and Sarah soon found that she was growing sleepy. Robert bent over and kissed Sarah on the cheek, making the Escalade swerve slightly as he put his arm around her shoulder. They both automatically looked down at Sarah's belly. They would go to all the natural child birth classes which met every Wednesday at seven, in the city. They both felt all the excitement and wonder that any new parents to be feels, and after their love making last night, they had sat up until the wee small hours of the morning talking of names, education...if the baby was a boy, Harvard, Robert's alma-mater and follow in Robert's footsteps, and become a Lawyer. If the baby was a girl, she would go to Sarah Lawrence, and become a successful freelance writer, and reporter, like Sarah.
Sarah was twenty-six, and Robert thirty. Their life up till now had been full and exciting. They had a beautiful apartment in the city over looking the U.N. Plaza. Robert was a successful attorney who would be campaigning for a seat in the Senate in four years. Which right now seemed a long way off, and something that Robert wasn't so sure that he even wanted. Sarah wanted whatever made Robert happy...they were the ideal couple. They drove on in happy silence, both anticipating a wonderful time living on the lake house. Robert looked down to see that his beautiful wife had fallen asleep. Probably dreaming about the wonderful times they would share in their perfect, perfect home on the lake, he thought to himself, as he drove on to their destination smiling.
