Cause I've Been Hurt Before

Updated on May 21, 2013

There are certain things
I wish I had known
before my innocence
was stole,
but babe,
you've got to have
your heart broken
before you truly know
how to protect it.

We go through the motions,
and deal with tough emotions.
We start feeling hopeless

and I know
how hard it is
to break your focus
on the love you
hoped would grow.

Give yourself a few days to cry,
let grief occupy your mind.
Play the same sad song a few nights
and only sleep when
you've emptied a bottle of wine.
Sulk, but hurry to restore hope
cause I'm only giving you three days.

On the fourth,
you will know what you're worth.
You won't settle for the guy
who treats you the worst.
Believe me, cause I've been hurt before.

There's something about heartache
that causes a girl's spirit to break,
birthing a grown woman.

As you pick up your broken
heart from the floor
and cut your finger with one of the pieces,
let a profound spirit
take over your senses.

It's cool to be brave if you're safe.
You don't have to be bitter
to learn from your mistakes.
A strong heart feels and it bends,
but it is too skilled to break.

Put all of your faith in what I'm saying.

I know cause I've been hurt before.

That is absolutely true. I feel like pain makes us all better learners. Thanks!

Love hurts but it teaches us lesson to learn and makes us stronger even ten times wiser. Good reading.

Relationships take hard work and the one thing which will never change is that love hurts.

Fantastic expression of your 'before' and marvelous 'after' too!

A very heartfelt poem. It's like "may pinaghuhugutan" or there is an experience behind those lines. ;-)

      great job!

I enjoyed reading this one. Heartbreak is awful but we do survive and grow stronger.

A musical quality to this and good advice as well. I have known some women with broken hearts and can tell that you have too.

We learn from hardship. If everything came easy, we'd never appreciate anything.
