Cold Latte - A Free Verse Poem
Background
This poem is a story about a dead woman who returns from her grave as a spirit, to make the man responsible for her death realize his crime by letting him know that she is still around, and will be, until he confesses his guilt.
The Poem
The cup is cold
As is the wind outside
Large droplets slash the pane
I must get out
Across the table
You sit silently
Gazing at the steam
Hovering over your cup
A casual glance
On the monthly magazine
And a frozen finger
Against the carved handle
I know you from beyond
The dark and the light
The rain and the storm
I’ve known you always
The winds keep whirling
The clouds get dark
I know I must go
Yet can’t seem to stand up
Your hot cappuccino
Mocks my latte
The heat and the despair
Crush my cup
I finally make my move
And borrow some ice
From the smiling waiter
To ruin your life
I remember the pain
Underneath my grave
While you cried those fake
Tears standing above
I must get out
The ice is your friend
Your coffee’s foe, and
The chills down your spine
My work here is done
My foot sets out again
A warm cup in my hand
Into the tranquil rain
