snaps shut.

Its ancient irons

coil around thought

beyond the ken

of acceptability.

Morals unadorned

sit in stocks of shame

awaiting fear's flight

into darkness.

Conscience's shield.

While the heart listens

bears the cost

of temerity unleashed.

Great personification, Audrey....we often struggle with the gray areas in our lives. And though we sometimes get away with the little things, our hearts indeed bear the cost of temerity. Beautiful, up and sharing.

Y'now Audrey, I have a little difficulty with this one, compared to the minamalist powerhouses of yours I've read thus far. The first stanza here has the strength and impact-in-small that is your signature. After that, the poem merges into the abstract, as though didacticism rather than metaphor was fueling it. I didn't feel the INVITATION to enter the experience that is the magic of your work. Perhaps all this is more me than the structure and intent of the poem..........

Very profound . . . while the heart listens. When the conscience is awakened, then comes that cost no doubt. Excellent.

Hi Moonfroth--this does feel different to me as well. It has been in my notebook for months and I had an experience yesterday that caused me to think about it again. So I pulled it out, I appreciate your insight and comments---as always

This poem, like many good poems that have much to say in a few words, requires careful reading and rereading. "Morals sit in the stocks of shame," for we have allowed them to be trampled to "shield" our "conscience(s)". "Temerity unleashed" can commit destructive acts, even crimes against humanity, from which conscience certainly needs shielding, from "thought beyond the ken of acceptability."

Well, that is my reading of this very moving poem.

This goes beyond mere dilemma or quandary between right and wrong within the individual in whom this drama is unfolding. Traditional morality tangling with a mind which exists outside of tradition but its shadow casts upon conscience fearfully, with a naturally enlightened, understanding heart still having to pay the piper in anguish and guilt. All the parts, doing what they do; & as often happens, being out of sync among themselves.

Of course, it's well presented and thought-provoking - it's written by you, Audrey! Thanks for the treat!

Sorry Audrey, a typo there. It should be 'profoundly beautiful places.'

And yes the cats and I are surviving our 'Canadian' winter - there have been days where 'the whole family sat out on the deck' soaking up the sun during our morning coffee time but today is not one of them,

Winter in these parts doesen't end until mid - April I'd say and spring in May. Yes it's always so nice to connect with you and thank you also for your gracious comments to me and when it comes from someone whom I hold in high regard then it really means a lot to me - lake erie time 8:15pm and as I speak - the furnace is blowing now and guess who is in front of it ..... lol
