Dark Poetry--Ravages of War

Updated on July 19, 2012

About

I don't usually write dark poetry, however, I was challenged by a friend to write a dark poem about a war based in ancient times and on the battlefield. I had to complete the poem within 20 mins. This was truly a challenge for me. Thank-you for taking the time to read this!!

Ravages of War

The fields lay wet with the bloody pride

several thousand beaten then died.

Slaughtered by those that were once friends

beaten down solemnly to no ends.

Forseen by those that parted with the treachery that unfolds

never such a time that betrayal holds.

Another day, another hour,

clinging to the spiteful power.

Even those that were once strong

their days now limited and not too long.

The seas have been parted, the omens told

all is forgotten because none is too bold.

To fight the beast that lay within

would betray those who fell in sin.

The heavens roar with a thunderous bout,

they march on regardless of doubt.

Slashing with their heathen ways

never again to see the light of day.

For Those Following this Poem

I am so very, very touched by rcrumple's Poetry: The Soldier's Battle and truly with nearly tears in my eyes, appreciate his introduction!!

Very well written. Not often I come across a poem I actually enjoy versus just seeing writing talent behind it, your's is both. Nice job.

      Unfortunate as it may be,

man fights wars in air, on land and on sea.

For religion, vengeance, even greed too,

his battle's set, evil things he must do.

His job is to kill and to survive,

he's done his part if tonight he's still alive.

War's not his choice, he's just a tool,

politicians choose, it's their Golden Rule.

While they sit safely on their thrones,

and broadcast their words in deafening tones.

And tomorrow the soldier faces his counterpart foes,

      It's a soldier's duties, a soldier's woes.

Great job! Your poetry paints pictures as it tells a tale. It inspired me to jot out the above in minutes. Very good writing!

..well it's amazing what the human mind can come up with inside 20 minutes or so and under relative pressure - most people would require a lifetime to wrtie something this good which means you are just a natural at this and a darn good storyteller too when it comes to narrative poetry

with meaning and substance - sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 9:09am
