Does it Always End? - a Poem about Relationships and Goodbyes

Updated on December 23, 2014
Goodbye seems to happen way too often.

Does It Always End?

So this is how it ends?

Not even dead, but gone.

Once light and alive--

flaming, unquenched,

rising with the sun,

and never setting . . .

and yet it ends.

What makes it end?

It wafts and falters,

soon dimming,

cooling off,

settling to nothing,

so soon it's gone.

Isn't it?

What keeps it around?

Keeps it warm and burning,

still surprising,

rising at least

to some expectation

enough, anyway . . .

Does it always end?

Hi Victoria...it certainly seems like this is the way it ends. I think that relationships based primarily on attraction, without much else, are doomed to this end. The old cliches' hold, Ive learned...that friendship that turns into love is a much more complete relationship. The hot burning scintillating fires burn out quickly...leaving smouldering embers..which eventually become cold and turn to dust. This is how I read your beautiful poem..UP Awesome Beautiful.

"Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth, until the hour of separation" Which of us does not believe it is forever and then proceed to take care of it, as though it were. Perhaps better to take care of it knowing everything in life will come against it. None the less, this was elegantly expressed. Be well Victoria!

Victoria.....Now I'm sad. You've stirred some disappointing memories. But that's not a bad thing. Sometimes, as the adage goes...."Those who do not remember the past, are doomed to repeat it."

      I love arb's comment.....it' very true. UP++

Crushing memories that can bring any one down. However, like any other day, we get up and face this world...taking our task of life with positivism and joy. What really matters is how good we can feel by just inspiring others. For instance, this piece of yours. Excellent words with profound meanings yet with hope.

Goodbyes are such bitter sorrow and thus comes the end when the blend that was there at the beginning fades into oblivion. A sad truth as life deals us the cards and the joker is cruel when two hearts are mixed and shuffled and tossed to the floor without a farewell or adieu.

Oh how I cried when I said goodbye and the long road awaited me as I strive to survive loss love. Voted Up, you stirred some of my past and I felt a tug at my heart's sting. Bravo my poetic friend.

If I remember correctly, Gibran. Been a while but I'm pretty sure. It is the lost of anything which makes us hold it all the tighter the next time we have it. And, there is always a next time.

What a very deep and vivid picture you paint in this wonderful piece of work. It's heart renching when a relationship ends but I always used to try - somehow - to see it as new beginning and moving onto something better!

Endings seem like darkness and 'The End' at the time, but they're inevitably also a beginning, once that cloud parts and one can again see the sun, which is still shining.

A beautiful but sad and poignant poem. We have all been there. Trouble is we never see the start of the end in order to preserve it, only the end when it is right there in front of us, too late.

      Awesome poem and well expressed

Victoria Lynn - What moving poetry you write! I read this three times. There is so much "meat" in every line.

You have a genuine gift for expressing that which is felt so deeply.

      "Once light and alive--

      flaming, unquenched,

      rising with the sun,

      and never setting . . .

      and yet it ends.

Oh how I understand this and oh how I love these words.

Voting up and across, but not funny. Thank you!

Beautifully said, Victoria. There are some ends that are just ends, some that are beginnings pretending to be ends and some that are not ends but a mere pause - when the universe holds its breath. You have a talent for telling the deeper truths in dainty verses. Brilliant.
