EARTHBOUND

"Earthbound" - Rodney Crowell

By: Wayne Brown

Distant stars and planets cast their nightly light

Signaling, ever present, in the darkened night

I long to touch the far reaches of that universe

Earth holds me firmly back, Gravity is my curse

Shooting stars streak etchings on the night sky

Asteroids and comets on their way go passing by

Water vapor and dust form planet’s perfect rings

Gravity welds me in place; I cannot touch these things

The Milky Way with clusters of starry, milky light

Shows across the universe; lighting a darkened night

Highlighting the constellations hung in stars on the sky

Gravity holds me to the ground, I cannot yet fly

Light years in the distance yet seemingly so close by

The Heavens open up above revealing God’s night sky

The sanctity of space, the spatial relevance we embrace

Gravity keeps me earthbound, solidly in place

The Sun, the Moon, the stellar array, arranged on the dark

The sheer beauty in full display surely God’s remark

Placed on a night canvas suspended in the solitude of space

Unable to reach and touch it, Gravity keeps me in place

Humanity is but a speck to the Universe’s nightly glow

Staring at the sky entranced in Heaven’s awesome show

Imagination takes over control and lifts me through the night

Gravity’s chains are broken; my mind leaps forth in flight

This is one flight I would love to be on. Let gravity release me from earth and allow me to soar into the Milky way and become an Atom again to be reconnected with another living soul in time and space.

Loved it Wayne, it lifted me to want to be in lofty frontiers in outer space and galaxies. The last 7.5 lbs we release from our dead bodies will soar amongst the galaxy of everlasting life. On to our next great adventure:0)

@saddlerider1....There is much wonder in the night sky when one can really get to a place to take it in. I love to look upon that vastness and realize how so ever tiny we are in the immenseness of it all...it is overpowering! Thanks for the good comment! WB

Orgasmic...I mean, cosmic....one in the same. Beautiful, out of this world writing. I literally felt like I was flying.

Wayne Brown, you know how much I adore all things just the other side of low earth orbit, and I adore you for writing such a wonderful piece for me to enjoy! ~ Laura

@lalesu...I don't know how you found this one...it's been around a couple of months or so but only 14 people ever read it. I thought it was one of my better works but the diskjockeys did not agree! LOL! Great to hear from you. Hope you had a great New Years and hope you get back to writing again soon...we miss ya! WB

What a beauty! Loved the lines: Placed on a night canvas suspended in the solitude of space . . . Imagination takes over control and lifts me through the night

Maybe you feel this so strongly because of your experiences flying. You take the reader there too!

The song has some great lines too, and the video is amazing. Hoping we'll see similar things next week with the shuttle take-off?

I know you enjoy quite a few genres, but a master poet you are indeed!

@Truckstop Sally...You are so correct, I did draw on my flight experience in writing this. It extends beyond that to the sheer wonderment of mankind as he stares up at the universe on any given night. Thank you so much for those kind words! WB
