Motivational Quotes from Sheri Dew

Updated on August 22, 2016

Sheri L. Dew (born November 21, 1953) is an inspirational speaker, writer, White House delegate to the United Nations, and the president and chief executive officer of Deseret Book. In 2003, she was described as “the most prominent single LDS woman right now”.

She has written several books and I have studied her writings and chosen a few of her quotes to post here. These quotes were taken from her book, Saying It Like It Is.

It is actually easier to motivate someone to do something difficult than something easy. That’s because the status quo is uninspiring. Our spirits crave to progress, and if we aren’t moving forward, we’re not happy.

Those who think of life as a personal ministry tend to be less lonely, less likely to feel that life has spun out of control, more inclined to have a gentle heart, more filled with purpose.

Holiness means walking away from the philosophies of man. It means looking to prophets for spiritual counsel, not celebrities or experts, who may be appealing but who all come packing personal motives and an arsenal of half-truths. It is deadly to take counsel from anyone whose primary motive is to build his or her own kingdom.

The doctrine of the Atonement is a doctrine of healing. The Savior heals us from the effects of sin, when we repent. He heals our weaknesses and mistakes. He heals broken promises, broken lives, broken hearts. When we demonstrate the faith to seek after Him, and try our best to follow Him, He will heal us.

Challenges that tax our faith are usually opportunities to stretch and strengthen our faith by finding out if we really believe the Lord will help us.

True leaders understand that leadership is not about them but about those they serve. It is not about exalting themselves but about lifting others up.

Coming unto Christ means walking away from the world, and walking away from the world means choosing holiness and purity over worldliness and impurity.

In today’s world, there are too many good people with no conviction, and too many evil people filled with conviction. The world is crying out for leadership--which is why these are the days in which a true leader wants to live, for the opportunities to change lives and even destinies are endless.

While we tend to equate motherhood solely with maternity in the Lord’s language, the word Mother has layers of meaning. Of all the words they could have chosen to define, her role and her essence, both God the Father and Adam Called Eve The Mother of all Living and they did so before she ever bore a child. Like Eve, our motherhood began before we were born. Motherhood is more than bearing children, though it is certainly that. It is the essence of who we are as women.

When we label one another, we make judgments that divide us from each other and inevitably alienate us from the Lord…We gain nothing by segregating ourselves based on superficial differences. What we have in common—is so much more significant than any distinctions in our individual lives.

If sixty-second ads can influence us to spend money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t even like, then how will minutes, hours, months, and years of watching infidelity, violence, and promiscuity affect us?

Jesus Christ is not our last chance, He is our only chance. He will show us the way because He is the way.

Every relationship—husband and wife, parent and child, best friends, colleagues—is dependent on trust. It is not possible to have a relationship with some you cannot trust. The only thing you can have with someone you can’t trust is a strategy.

It is simply not for us to judge each other. The Lord has reserved that right for Himself, because only He knows our hearts and understands the varying circumstances and complexities of our lives.
