Foolish (poem)

Updated on March 4, 2013

Here's another oldie to add from 2009. It's interesting to see your writing and draw comparisons. I'm going to post it here right now and then move it over my new website later.

It is foolish - but yes, I wonder if
in an alternate reality, I had the strength
to get over you and move on
And the next time I'd see you
You'd see me walking hand in hand
with another man looking at me
the way I wished you were looking at me

And would it hurt you to know
that I've managed to get along
just fine without you
would it just burn to know
while I'm making love to him
I'm not thinking of how
it would like
to be like this with you
Because all I'm thinking about
is him and not you

You would see the glint of the jewel
in my wedding ring -- and you would see
how much this man loves me
would that cause you pain
would you regret ever letting me go
tell me would it just kill you
to watch me looking at him, loving him
the way you always wanted me to

But it's just all the same
Because I know that
if I was sharing my body
with another man
I'd be thinking of you
And I guess it's just foolish
to think of things that will never happen

But there's not sense in denying it
No sense in lying about it
Because I'm too deep, too consumed
And he'd always be second best
to you, he'd always be second best
And I couldn't look at him
knowing how I feel about you

so it's just foolish...
just foolish...

It's always best to be honest with your own heart.

Blaise25, second best feels like getting drunk off of non-alcoholic drink and waking up in the morning with a hangover. You get the shame and twice the humilation of finding out the truth that it was all a lie. ;)

      Thanks for reading!

Foolish indeed. What does it feel to be a second best...

a potent poem to be sure, full of the heart ache of having to move on when all we want is for the old to be made new again, this was a moving read
