Free Cookie -Short Story by Raj Lally Sharma

"How much is one cookie ?" A Girl with backpack asked Ray (cashier) in a restaurant with shaky voice . She looked like a high school girl . She asked in tembling voice as she was not sure if she would be able to buy it or not.

Ray answered "Fifty two cents with tax."

She was having a backpack with lot of books in that. She opened her purse and tried to collect change as much she had . She was able to get together 37 cents which were too far from fifty two cents. She said " Never mind ."

She sat on the table in the restaurant and opened her books and started doing her homework .She was trying to focus on the books but Ray can see that her hunger was moving her attention to cookies.

Ray felt that there is no difference between him and her . We are both struggling hard to settle down . As Ray migrated from his country to USA for better life and was working hard to settle down.

Ray called that girl and offered her three cookies free of charge but she said that she need only one .Ray gave her one free cookie . She ate cookie and drink some water and then went back on the table and started her home work .

After some time that girl left and said "Thank you so much and Merry Christmas " to Ray.

"Merry Christmas to you too." Ray answered.
