Freelance Writing - A Rewarding Career- Part 1

Updated on August 4, 2012

Great way to make money online

Who would have ever thought back in the sixties and seventies of the last century that it would be possible for the modern man/woman to earn a decent income from the comfort of their own homes? Home-based businesses did exist then but they involved the completed work to be taken out to be marketed for the business to survive. But now, with the advancement of technology, everything from planning to preparation to payment has become an online process and the best example for this is online writing.

Internet-based businesses are attracting more and more people to the extent of doing away with their day jobs that are giving people the jitters due to the bad economy prevailing all over the world. I am sure no one works for others with all their willingness. They may have their own reasons for working under a demanding boss like family, school-going children and so many bills to pay month after month. If only they found a way to make money online how glad they would be to quit their dreary day jobs!

Freelance writing will not help you quit your job right away, but it certainly will prepare you to manage the extra expenses that your normal monthly income cannot afford. It has become as popular as it is today due to the boom in the internet development. Everyone is talking about online businesses, websites, website promotions and so on. There is plenty of scope for the freelance writer to make an extra income with a large section of the population offering writing work online.

How I got into freelance writing

Before actually going into the details of where to go online and find a writing job, let me briefly explain how I happened to enter this field. I spent fifteen years in an uninteresting banking job though the income from the job helped me maintain a good standard of living. How I wish I knew about this writing work before! I am happy that I got to know about it at some point in my life though a trifle late and I am very thankful. I quit my job due to rheumatoid arthritis and was looking for ways and means to compensate the huge loss incurred due to the absence of a fixed monthly income.

It was in 2007, six years after quitting my job, that I learned about online writing as a means to getting a decent income sitting at home. A friend asked me if I would do a small writing assignment for his friend in New Zealand and I promised to give it a try. I completed the project and much to my surprise, my client (of 5 years now) approved it and even had a word of appreciation for a job well done. My joy knew no bounds at the thought of getting many more such assignments from him. I hadn't even realized that I had this talent in me. Being a non-native English person, I was a little skeptical initially wondering if I would be able to do justice to the job and fulfill the expectations of my clients. Fortunately I have been quite successful working as a freelance writer and in the process making a considerable income from home. I would be very happy if this hub inspires writers starting out new in this field.
