From The Corners

Updated on September 7, 2010

Have you seen it

In the clubs, financial ruin is

A sort of invisible

People are want

To get too close once they know

You have it, even

Once close friends, try

Not to be noticed when

You enter the room, not knowing

What to say or

How to act if

They are trapped

Into facing you.

They try to move

To the corners of the room,

And the center becomes rather

Un-crowded as you move

Through it. Even

A friendly wave seems

They can’t help, and

They know it, but

They are made

By their inadequacy,

The inability to stop.

I think, some are afraid

That it

Will somehow rob off

On them, the bad luck,

The hopelessness,

The incomprehensible

The fear…….. “My God,

If it can happen to him, it could

Happen to me”,

Their attitude almost screams

From the corners.

      James -

This is a keeper-I'm going to print it off.

Society has become so sterile -once it was don't speak of death-now don't speak of the reality of what's happening all around us-unemployment,repossessions,homelessness,suicides etc.Real people suffering-because of govt.and bankers et al.

Thanks G.... Its a scary time now for a lot of people who never thought it could happen to them. They are watching friends dragged down and then finding themselves caught up in the dwindling spiral. Nobody knows how to help, or what to say or even how to talk about it and as you point out its not just happening to "the poor". A lot of people who put their faith in the American Dream are losing everything and unfortunately I think we are going to see a lot more of the middle collapse in the coming years. JM

I saw a homeless woman on the corner today. She looked normal, not like all of the pics they always post on the web or in the local news. I saw another woman with her two children begging for money last week. Her kids were the same age as mine and she looked distraught, but well groomed. This scared me a lot. So, I stopped my car and went to ask questions. This gave me a sort of calm.

The woman with the children was new to the streets and her husband had skipped town and left them without anything and she eventually lost her house. She told me her story and how things unfolded. I gave her some money and a number to call to leave a message if she needed anything. She never called. I often wonder how everyone is making it by in this current economy? No one ever talks about it and I can see clearly what you describe here in this hub. This economic chaos will not be over for a long time and I believe a lot of these people you describe "see it coming" and they know that they can't live on credit much longer. Thank you for the very "visual" hub. Best, G
