GOD DO YOU REMEMBER ME

Updated on March 12, 2016

I am that little black girl playing on the gravel road

I am that same girl holding on to her grandma’s leg

The little black girl that thought she was happy there

God do you remember me

I am the little black girl that was taken to a foreign land

The same girl that missed her grandma so much

She could hardly stop crying

God do you remember me

I am the same little black girl that was sent to an all-white school

The same little girl that they called ugly

The one that froze with no boots and no gloves in the cold winter

God do you remember me

I am the same little black girl who was abused at home

Who fought back for survival

And who men abused, but I am older now

God do you still remember me

I am the same little black girl who was homeless

Who was disregarded by her family

But never forgot that you made her for a purpose

God do you remember me now

I am the same little black girl who graduated

From grade school, high school and college

But never had a graduation ceremony

God do you remember me

I am the same little black girl who married a man

That used and abused her and her children

But I still never gave up hope that you had a purpose for me

God do you remember me

I am the same little black girl who alone fought

To save her children and give them back their lives

And I am still fighting to bring them to you

God can you hear me, I think I heard you once

I am the same little black girl who will never let you go

Who recognizes that you have always had my back

And still waiting for the peace you promised me

God do you remember me

God do you remember me now, that same little black girl

I want to laugh again; I don’t want to cry any more

But God if you remember me

I am still here holding on to you
