Gone Home
I may never leave this country
Or move out of this state
But if, per chance, you catch me
When it's quiet, or it's late
My eyes may have a vacant look
I may not know you're there
You very well might find me
Enveloped in a stare
Although it may be difficult,
Leave well enough alone.
Please be still, for just a moment,
Chances are that I've gone home.
If you should find me smiling,
Envision an old friend
Though, by miles and years departed,
Cherished memories know no end
My eyes may close as to protect
The ones I hold most dear
I may, simply be wishing
I was there,
or they were here.
I know it may be difficult
To leave well enough alone
Please be still --
for just a moment,
Chances are that I've gone home.
For much too soon, I will return
With memories tucked away
They seldom merit credence
In the routines of a day
But what precious time is mine to spare
I curl up in my heart
With warm and loving memories
For they are my finest part...
And it may be all that you can do
To leave well enough alone.
But, please, be still --
just for this moment
Chances are that I've gone home.
