Senryu: Heartfelt Thoughts and Emotions in 17 Syllables

Updated on January 27, 2017
Source

Have you ever written a senryu?

See results

This collection of senryu — similar to haiku, but dealing with an emotion rather than nature — is dedicated to my friend Dave, who pushed me to write beyond limits I wrongly perceived.

Thank you, my friend.

Senryu for Dave

much sadness and pain

write —
my good friend challenged me

enduring friendship

Friendship

all gold and silver in the world is nothing — compared to true friendship

Compassion

compassion

caring

sharing

helping those different from you —

don’t stop

Daisy

from a seed that’s nurtured

and cared for

emerges a flower —

daisy

Mariposa

out of her cocoon

into the light...

transformation —

a butterfly

I decided to read your Senryu as I don't think this was here 22 months ago. I love your senryu collection and the way you created emotions from your own name.

I would love to try writing with this style, but I'm not sure I have enough knowledge and I don't want to look like a fool.

How wonderful to have someone like Dave to encourage you. I wouldn't have wanted to miss your lovely creation. Pinning, tweeting, g+ and sharing with my followers. - Love, Audrey

      Nell,

Thanks for reading my senryu collection and commenting in it. Thanks, too, for tweeting my Hub.

Both haiku and senryu are 17-syllable poems. Haiku traditionally deal with subjects related to nature. Senryu deal with emotions.

      Maria,

Thanks for reading my senryu collection and posting your comment. I appreciate your very kind words.

Did you notice that the article title is also 17 syllables?

These senryu wrote themselves in a matter of minutes. The words simply flowed into my brain. I hadn't been thinking about writing poetry.

The less structured 17-syllable format, rather than the more structured 5 / 7 / 5 format, seems to work especially well for senryu. Some of the information I found while doing research for my poetry articles stated that it's OK to write in what I like to think of as 17-syllable "bursts" instead of the three-line format. The articles have said that the syllable count is what matters, not the line count.

The photograph is one I took on the island of Utö, the southernmost island in the Stockholm archipelago. The border is one which I created using Photoshop.

      Dear Daisy,

Thank you so much for sharing as I had completely missed this sentimental and soulful sampling of senryu.

I learn so much flexibility and creativity from you...I will start thinking in total syllables, as opposed to 5-7-5, as I was limiting myself to the traditional Enlish format.

Your photograph and tasteful borders make your work truly come alive. You have a beautiful name and I love that you intertwined it in your work.

Thank you for giving me inspiration this morning.

Voted UP and UABI. Hugs, Maria

Thanks for reading the poems in my haiku collection and posting your comment. All six of my poems have 17 syllables, but some don't adhere to the traditional English language haiku format of three lines with 5 / 7 / 5 syllables.

      Vinaya,

Thanks for visiting again. I appreciate your continued support of my writing.

*Daisy* and *Mariposa* are also my two favorite haiku in the collection.

I sometimes think in groups of seventeen syllables. Words just pop into my head that way. I tried writing haiku in the traditional 5/7/5 format, but it just doesn't work for me. Everything seems forced; the words don't flow the way I would like them to.
