Have you known love - a poem

Updated on January 17, 2012

Have you known love - true love?

Have you known love?
That deep beautiful feeling,
Which pervades your entire being,
Steeps you in it,
Until you submit.

Have you known its power?
To let go and never to take control,
To believe without a doubt,
And to trust inside out!

Have you hurt with love?
Because you are so full of it,
Only wanting to give,
Every bit of it, while you live!

Have you seen love?
It is not a pretty face,
It is aching in the wrinkles,
Of a mother's smiling crinkles!

Have you tasted love?
It is not in the flush of youth,
But in the mellow tenderness,
Of knowing deep truths!

Have you touched love?
Not in melding of naked bodies,
But in the yearnings of the soul,
Spoken in hallowed whispers,
Of faithful worshipers!

Have you known love?
Which never gives up or falls out,
Which never resents or causes pain,
Remains true and does not feign!

Have you inhaled love?
Its breath so innocent,
Fragrantly potent,
Reaching out its hands,
Never withdrawing but expands,
To fit you into,
Its palpitating space, so true!

That is my kind of love,
That is all I know,
In loves warmth I glow!

Haikutwinkle, I love your poems... You were the first person I really connected with.. and your poems speak a lot in few words.. You are right, our experiences do shape the way we think and express ourselves. I really want you to know that your comments mean a lot to me ..especially in one poem of pain that I had written.. Life within... your words were like healing balm, they made me feel so at peace that day... I was still thinking of my little one... I will never forget that. You are a good poet and a wonderful human being. Have a blessed day. Peace!

You have an elegant way of creating harmony, calm and neutrality in all of your poem (at least in the ones I have read).

My poems, however, have a tendency to struggle or strive strenuously towards that level. It takes great effort, experiences, wisdom and time to reach that kind of level (I think). It would be wonderful to achieve such neutrality in the ocean of materialism/negativity/sarcasm.

      :) Very delicate work!

I agree with you about Michelangelo's paintings, maybe not with the rest. I have no concerns regarding the Word of God. I take him at His Word. I believe He created man and multiplied them... on the face of the earth through those He created. There is no question of evolution, but we lost His image and likeness through sin and unless you are transformed through his Word Romans 12:2 we cannot be conformed to the image of his son. That is Biblical and I believe and so I live!! Thanks for the comment.

This is an absolutely beautiful poem, shimmering Dawn; I am so moved! It speaks to me and brings to my mind the Love the Lord fills me with and pours out on me. Thank you for sharing.

Of all Michelangelo's inspired paintings, this one (for me) heads the list and answers any concerns I might have had as to Evolution or Creation. Man evolved (Evolution) and when that evolving reached a point in his development, God reached out, touched him, and gave him Spirit (Creation). Potentially millions of years to evolve, and an instant to be finally created in God's image. And, God loved that man and gave him a helpmate, and the two had children as part of God's plan, and in the meridian of time God gave his only begotten Son as an atoneing sacrifice for sin to all who will believe, repent, and be baptized in righteousness. To know God and his Son, is to know eternal love. To express such love in the way we live is "to know love" by loving.
