Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a fictional school of magic in the Harry Potter series. The school has four houses. The four houses in the school are Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor. Any student who is inducted in Hogwarts is sorted into any one of the four houses. Each house sorts students who have certain distinct trait. The sorting of students is done by the Snorting Hat which assesses the student's mind and opinions to make its sorting decision. Children only with magical abilities are chosen in Hogwarts school. When a child turned eleven and had magical powers, they would be sent an invitation letter by the school administration to join. If the student accepts the invitation they are admitted to the school without any examination. Students are allowed to bring pets and other necessary materials useful for their stay.

Four Houses at Hogwarts

Hufflepuff :- Helga Hufflepuff founded Hufflepuff house in Hogwarts school. Fat Frair is the ghost of Hufflepuff house. The house colors are yellow and black. Badger is the Hufflepuff house's emblematic animal. Hufflepuff house corresponds to the element of earth and students sorted in Hufflepuff are hard working with good aptitude for Herbology. Fair play, loyalty, honesty and patience are some of the qualities in the majoirty of Hufflepuff students. Hufflepuff students foster a friendly and accommodating environment. Due to this their house hardly ever have any rivalry with the other houses.

Ravenclaw :- Rowena Ravenclaw founded Ravenclaw house in Hogwarts school. The Grey Lady is the ghost of Ravenclaw house. The emblematic animal for the house is eagle and the house corresponds to the element of air. The house colors are blue and bronze. Students sorted in Ravenclaw are intelligent, creative, wise and ingenious. Students in Ravenclaw house experiment with many different original magic spells and are very competitive in nature. Ravenclaw house has very limited rivalry with any other house. However due to their competitive nature, rivalry within the house is more.

Slytherin :- Salazar Slytherin was the founder of Slytherin house at Hogwarts. Bloody Baron is the ghost of Slytherin house. The snake is the emblematic animal for this house and the house corresponds to the element of water. The colors of the house are green and silver. Students selected in Slytherin house are generally resourceful, ambitious, clever, cunning and self-preservative. Being of pure blood origin is also one of the qualities necessary to be selected in Slytherin. Although many of the wizards in the Slytherin house are good, the house has a reputation of having many dark wizards.

Gryffindor :- Godric Gryffindor founded Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. Nearly Headless Nick is the ghost of Gryffindor house. The colors of the house are red and gold and the house corresponds to the element of fire. The emblematic animal of the house is lion. The students sorted in Gryffindor house are brave, courageous and daring. Gryffindor students are good in academics and their friendship goes well with Hufflepuff house's students. Gryffindor house's rivalry with Slytherin house is very old and the same is obvious in sporting events in the school. The door to the common room of Gryffindor is guarded by the Fat Lady.

Routine and Events

Every house has its own common room in which students from other houses are not allowed and each house has its own dormitories. The common room of the Gryffindor house is Gryffindor Tower. The common room of the Hufflepuff house is Hufflepuff Basement. The common room of Ravenclaw house is Ravenclaw Tower. The common room of Slytherin house is Slytherin Dungeon. The houses compete with one another for the House Cup every year which is awarded to the house with the highest points. The points are awarded according to specific set of rules based on academic performance, sporting events, extra curricular activities and other achievements. The houses compete for the Quidditch cup every year which is the most enjoyed sport at Hogwarts. Discipline is maintained strictly at the school at all times with each house gaining or losing points due to their behavior. Food at Hogwarts is prepared by House-elves who cook a wide variety of foods, snacks and dishes for students and staff.
