How much money can you make as a freelance writer?

Updated on March 11, 2014

If you are a freelancer then this is one an article that you are going want to read.

On average, freelancers can make up to 4,000 a month, if not more.

Many writers have more than one project at a time, and this helps writers make money from different sources. Writers can make money from:

  • Blogs- Their own (Adsense, promoting services)
  • Guest blogging
  • private clients
  • e-books
  • Coaching services
  • content mills

This may come as a shock to many writers that are struggling to make ends meet today. If writers take their jobs seriously, and they understand how to earn money from any website(s) they contribute to, this goal can be achieved.

I started writing for $1 articles on This helped me for a while, until I started doing more research and found content mills such as Triond, Helium and even Associated content (now Yahoo contributer). Through these sites, I was able to make a few hundred dollars a month. Once I saw the true potential of this business, I started to take more time to do some research, and found out just how much I can charge for my writing services.

There are three things that can help ANY Writer make a decent salary EACH MONTH.

Making money from content mills

If you write for any content mill or any website that pays you money to publish content or a certain amount of money for the amount of traffic that your work receives, the one thing that you have to remember is that these sites DO want you to make money.

Content mills have a bad reputation because writers often do not get paid the amount of money that they deserve for their work. On the other hand, many blogger, and professional writers take the time to write a few articles and publish them on websites such as Helium, Hubpages, Yahoo contributer Network to make extra money on the side.

Writers can make money from these particular sites, and they can make more than enough to live on. One thing that writers HAVE to remember is that even though you can make money from writing on these sites, you have to know what you can write, and what can make you the most money.

Many writers criticize my choice of writing for places such as Helium, and even here on Hubpages, however, I do make money from these websites, and Hubpages in particular helps me learn all about marketing, SEO and keyword density. As I improve my writing, so does my earnings. Because I've increased my earnings on Hubpages, I've managed to take the time to build my traffic and attract more readers on my newest Blog- Beyond words-jessi, and at the same time, made money from that blog through Adsense.

If you are anything like me, you love to write. If I do not get out at least three articles, I feel unaccomplished. What helps me make the money that I need from writing online is just that, I love to write, and I focus on SEO and increasing my Keyword density on my articles or hubs, to make sure my work gets Indexed by Google faster.

These sites want writers to make money, which is why they have become so popular.

Here are 5 things that you can do to improve your earnings this month:

  1. Do research, and find out what the latest topics are, and join the crowd.
  2. Learn all about Keyword density, and SEO and apply it to every single one of your articles.
  3. Learn how to Market your articles on other websites, and use writing forums.
  4. Find popular blog, and comment on their articles, leave a link to your work on the comment.
  5. This is probably the most important thing to do: write more than one article at a time, and connect them to each other.

Learn how to make money from your blog.

I'm not a great writer, but I LOVE to write. When I started my very first blog, I started out very slowly. I'm talking about writing MAYBE one blog post every week, and WAITING for my readers to find me. This didn't work very well for me, since I made no money, and I was constantly looking for jobs online, and looking for answers as to WHY I wasn't making money from my blog.

There really is NO trick to make money from your blog. All you need is traffic, to bring you people to click on the Ads if you are using Adsense. If you are using your blog to promote yourself as a writer, and your skills, then you also need traffic to increase your chances of someone taking an interest in hiring you.

Like I said before, there isn't a trick to making money from your blog. But there are ways to make it easier for bloggers to cash out on Adsense much faster.

  • Learn how to market you ENTIRE blog. Not just your blog posts. I use Triberr and Blog Engage to market my blog, and my Hubs. The results have been incredible!
  • Join Blog communities, and meet other bloggers! This is not only smart, but it can also open doors for you as a writer and blogger. Since I joined several blog communities, I've developed several friendships that have helped me increase my blog revenue and hubpages earnings.
  • Update your blog as much as possible. I'm not just talking about blog posts, but also the appearance of your blog, and the information on it.
  • Subscribe to blogs. If you want your readers to subscribe to your blog, then subscribe to other blogs. Its as simple as that. The only way to generate traffic to your blog, is to join other blogs that already have the traffic and success that you want. You can not only learn from the blog, but you can also get to know other writers and share blog experience.

There is no reason why any writer can't make the money that they want every month. If I can do it, so can you!

I could consider myself lucky as I found you and your hubs useful hubs on earning online. Even I earn on an average of $1200-$1500 per month through my freelancing work. I basically enjoy writing and truly speaking its not the eagerness to earn that earns me trust and clients but my passion to write and explore the subject and myself into it. Please keep posting great hubs!

jayeWisdom: Thank you for reading my work. I'm so glad that you found my words helpful!

Jessiecaseo: Thank you for your words, and your encouragement. I'm glad that you are making the money that you are as a freelancer. My hubs are meant to help writers do just that! Thank you for stopping by!

alloporus: If I had a penny for every time a writer asked me if I had balance in my work, I probably wouldn't need to work anymore! lol I find it easier to schedule every piece of work, project, etc that I have planned for the week, at least a week in advance. ALSO when it comes to blog posts and hubs, I usually keep my information short and to the point. So, if I can't write a 600 word blog post, I don't beat myself up over it. I'm just as happy with a 300 well-written blog post. Hope this helps!

sandrabusby: Thank you so much for stopping by! Thank you for your words! I appreciate the support!

A writer's best bet is to use a little bit of the content mills before they leap into the freelancing career-ie before they quit so that those can be slightly profitable. If I had to do over again, I would have started writing for hubpages sooner and started on the ebook bandwagon before I leapt into trying to get clients.

You re joking of course. Are you saying you earn $4,000 a month? I don't believe it, and I don't believe there are any freelancers out there working the content mills earning anywhere near this amount. I'm a working writer - meaning I get stuff published in newspapers and magazines as well as on paying web sites, and have had occasional success with my writing - but there's no way I would expect those kind of figures. I think you are making this up. Still, what I've noticed is that any hub which promotes the idea of earning money from freelancing does very well on the HubPages rankings, so this looks like a case of bumping up your own income writing exaggerated hubs about making large amounts of money from freelancing in order to make a little bit more money yourself.

I really can't understand why Adsense is always given preference (as you too 've done in this case). They not only pay a very meagre but also take away your hard-earned readers (traffic).

By far, Blogs have been the most successful and promising tactic for freelancers. Famous bloggers include down-to-earth Darren Rowse and very beautiful Ana Hoffman. However, there are a lot of blogs on "How to Blog" So making a blog that stands out will (undoubtedly) require a lot of strategies, patience and time.

      I really enjoyed your HUB.

May I ask how long it took to get your work up and running? I head it can take as long as 6 months to actually several years. Is this true? I've read in some articles that...the secret is to produce as many posts as possible. even one per day goes a long way. Perez Hilton started by working really hard and producing 46 articles PER DAY.

Reading your hubs have been such an inspiration. The advice you give show that you really love your work and that you work very hard. Nothing comes easy, especially freelance writing. But as you said, by writing, joining blogging communities, learning SEO and how to market articles, all help with becoming successful. We all have talents and gifts to teach to many in this world.

      The best to you!

I am newer to HP and I am looking to start work as a freelancer. Trying to break into the business is overwhelming, but you have nicely laid out the ground work of how I might be able to make this work. I appreciate you taking the time to write this article to help others.

Thanks for the tips. I do have a warning -- be careful who hires you. I had a man on freelancer who had me working 24/7 for pennies (only for a very short time.)

Thanks Jess! This was very helpful. I am new here to Hubpages but certainly not new to the desire to be a freelancer. I started my first hub here on New Year's Eve. Way to get a resolution off to a good start wouldn't you say?

I will be sure to follow you because I can see that you are full of all of the good advice that I need to be a successful freelancer.

Thanks again for this post, I greatly appreciate it.

I have been looking to expand my writing contributions to other sites and I found this information very helpful in giving me a clue as to what I should be doing. Thanks for sharing. I now realize that I have to take the time to join other communities such as writing forums and subscribe to bloggers. I just started school for graphic and web design and will be starting my own blog pretty soon.

The information you provided gave me more insight thank you so much.
