ROUGHLY INSCRIBED

Updated on May 31, 2013
Source

Cutting the air, swung in a wide arc,

Battle Axe finds its mark,

Splitting sinew and flesh,

Crushing, splintering bone,

Words spoken, daggers and spears,

Tearing the soul and bleeding life,

Splattered words in flecked droplets,

Like a scroll tattooed in wine,

Verse roughly inscribed like initials,

Gouged from the rotting trunk of an old Oak,

Fathers oration, delusion,

Non existent audience ovation,

Over lesions toughened like rawhide,

Leather against assault,

I am written and told,

You are a diamond in the rough,

From one side of his face,

The other screaming,

No good! I'll kill you!

Barbarian, belt wielder,

Words gnawed into my bust,

Posed in survivalist strength,

A core of soft clay pain,

Enveloping the blood scribed,

Tale of a veteran sons,

Story rolled tight,

In papyrus of human tissue,

Knotted into my gut,

A grimace spreads across my face,

You behold a smile.

Yes, what bravewarrior said! Strange, menacing, a major skirmish described and visualized.

This is just great 'poetry' in narrative form - the words are magnificent and the overall feeling for me is haunting - it seems that you can switch gears and write anything in any form in any genre. Gee I know a guy like that - lol.

Yeah, I think I might know that guy too! Seems I passed him by one day while up in the Great White North! (and he wasn't one of The McKenzie Brothers)

bravewarrior: Thank you for the compliment. I understood going into this one that I was laying down quite a few layers, but that's just the way it pours from my heart to the keyboard sometimes.

Wayne - So intense and dramatic. It's quite different but it somehow reminds me of my first response to Akira Kurosawa's - "Rashomon" when I saw it sometime in the 1950s. . . . Violence on the surface but with so much subtlety playing underneath, which only you fully know.

Thank you, Nellieanna. That is quite a comparison to Kurosawa. Maybe this will be my break through piece as Rashomon was his. :-) hey, I can dream can't I?

This is a brilliant piece, yet very sad, deep and I saw the menace, fear and little compassion from the axeman. I am reminded visually of a character from my past who stood over me with evil intents, the belt swung, the welts they left, the tears flowed with no mercy given. No real defense being simply a boy, yet scars, revenge and grudge they left.

No mercy awarded to the axeman in later life, he swung from his cell with vomit dripping from his sordid lips. The curr he was, no sins washed clean they followed him to the deep Abyss, rightfully so.

Wayne, you are a talented writer and I look forward to following your work. Thank you for sharing this very deep heart felt penetration, I know it comes from deep within and hidden places, yet you let it out. Well done, tweeted and shared.
