I Float

The moment stills

into

a breath

the drop of water

glistening

its prismed world

a stillness

in which

I float

copyright/all right reserved Audrey Howitt 2012

I write this paragraph in defense of the smaller poetry forms. Haiku, Tanka, Senyru, and the like are true poetry and despite the fact that Hubpages deems poetry in the smaller forms to be "substandard," this poetry and these forms are anything but. I hope that Hubpages ill change its policy to make it easier to publish the shorter works of poetry without adding excess verbiage.

Once more HP has deemed this a substandard piece (June 4, 2013). I am again requesting that HP change its policy. As of August 22, 2014, HP still deems this a substandard piece, lacking quality. I don't think they will change their minds!

      Audrey,

I love it that with poetry so much can be said with so few words. Thank you for championing the acceptance of short-form poems.

I hope hubpages allow for publishing the shorter forms of poetry, the haiku, tanka and the rest.

I hope one of the Hub poetry editors reads this---------A rather pompous lady was standing beside Salvador Dali in a gallery, studying one of his paintings. Not realizing she was next to the painter himself, she turned to him and sniffed, "Humph! I've certainly never seen a clock like that!" Dali shot back, "Ah yes, Madam--but don't you wish you had?"

Modern poetry is a feast of styles and modes and forms and shapes and hallmark jello and bombast and rigid rhyme and Robert Service wannabes and gawd knows what else. Resources like HubPages have an obligation to remain receptive to it all, else they could stifle a poet capable of the magic you produced here. To see the world in a grain of sand is as valid and exciting as to see a universe in a massive Shadbolt canvas. Hubpages needs to consider such matters.

Your poem? I think the ultimate complement to a poem is to realize that it has caused a shift in your Way of Seeing. I will float. . . . . . .differently. . . . . . . .from now on. Thank you for this jewel.

It's all gorgeous, Audrey! This phrase grabs me:

      ". . . its prismed world . . . "

      It emcompasses so much imagery!

My poems are usually brief, but my style has been to publish them in mini-collections, so the 'substandard' hammer hasn't hit me. My reason for that practice has nothing to do with pleasing HP, though. I've just always felt my stuff needs its own mutual support! The few I've published as singles are a bit longer poems which seem to 'stand alone' or are little extras on prose hubs.

You seem to have circumvented HP's lack of love for short poetry. Your "excess verbiage" is perfect as is your beautiful poem.

Audrey, I love your poetry. The words may seem simple on the surface, yet reveal such depth and perception. I agree with Nellieanna: ". . . its prismed world . . . " The imagery is boundless with possibilities.

And I sooo agree with you about the length of a poem. “Substandard”? What hooey. Sorry, Hubmasters, but quality is, by far, a more substantive measure than quantity.

Nice job of painting such a vivid picture with such ease. It is a true talent to capture and paint a thought or feeling or picture in the mind of the reader with few words. I agree that HP needs to revise its stance on short form poetry. It is not my style of writing ( I am more geared towards lyrical or narrative) but I sure enjoy reading it. You opened interesting discussion about shorter and longer pieces of literature, I always say short story is much harder to write than a full length novel. It demands much more discipline and no fluff is allowed. You have written beautiful song and there is no need for additional words here.
