I GET THIS IDEA: A Poem About A Passion For Writing

Updated on December 3, 2012

I spend hours

      Just sitting in my room

      Writing down ideas

      Watching them bloom.

I get this idea

      And it seems so right

      Sometimes I'm tired

So I put up a fight

      Cuz I get this idea

And I could write all night.

I can't stop until

      My ideas are all gone

      Then I fall asleep

      Until dawn

      When I awake

      I remember

      My ideas are on paper

      Some are so clever, and

      They're mine to keep forever.

There is so much I want to tell you

Important things I'm compelled to say

I write them down on paper

So I can tell you some day.

When something is on your mind

And you need to set it free

Just write it down on paper

      You'll feel better, you'll see.

It gives me such a good feeling

      To express myself this way

When I am in the mood

      I could write all day.

I get this idea

      And off I go

      Writing, writing

      And I can't go slow.

I spend so many hours

      Just sitting in my room

      Writing down ideas

      And watching them bloom.

I wrote this poem on August 6, 1987, before I owned a computer :) OMG, almost 25 years ago!  Hmmmm . . . things have changed since then but I still keep a pen and paper on my night stand :) sms

Good Morning CK, Writing is very therapeutic, definitely. And having thoughts spinning in our head about something we want to write or just something that is troubling us can be put to rest, at least for a little while, if we write it down. Thanks for your comments!

I really love this Sharyn and can relate to it so well! I get ideas and I have learned to carry around something to write on because sometimes I lose the thought otherwise I stay up all night sometimes because I get so involved. It is very therapeutic for me anyway....

      Thanks for sharing!

Good afternoon Mar, thanks for your comments. I have a box of probably about 15 or so "journals" which are actually steno note pads filled with stuff, most of which I don't care to look back on. But it was extremely helpful at the time. Take care!

Your poem brings back memories of when I spent time in my room, contemplating life as a young girl. I still have a journal and find it so comforting to write in it and find that when I'm in conflict, writing always helps.

      Hi Susan,

Thanks for commenting. Me too . . . I end up at the computer. But I still need my paper and pen available at times so I can simply get something off my mind quickly. Thanks again - have a great day!

FaithDream, Thank you for your wonderful comments! It is so true that we can be kept from sleep with writing ideas in our head. There are times when I am so into what I am writing that when I finally feel it is complete, I must then take a nap:)

Good Morning Sunnie D, Thanks for stopping by. I would love to see your little notes on scraps of paper . . . since you have very intriguing writing ideas that you build upon and bring to life . . . and by the way inspire me! Thank you too!

Your poem captures the essence of writing. Sometimes I can't sleep because of the words splashing around in my head.

Great work! Your poem is inspiring.
