I Want That Someone To Be Me
A Poem for My Husband
I want to be there for you if you need anything.
I want to be there for you, for everything.
If you are ever feverish and need someone to put a cool compress on your brow…
I want that someone to be me.
If you ever have aching shoulders and need someone to rub them to ease your pain…
I want that someone to be me.
If your heart aches because of the death of someone close to you, and you need someone to
wrap their arms around you so you can cry on their shoulder, I want that someone to be me.
If your eyes become dim and you need someone to read to you from a newspaper, a book or
the Bible…
I want that someone to be me.
If your hands become arthritic, curled with pain or old age, and you need someone to write a
letter for you…
I want that someone to be me.
If your ears lose their sense of hearing, and you need someone to repeat precious words to
you…
I want that someone to be me.
If your legs grow weary and you need someone to push your wheelchair…
I want that someone to be me.
When I think of how great my love is for you, and how much I want to be there for you when
you want or need anything; I can better understand how Christ loved his disciples and washed
their feet out of love. ..
And how he loves each one of us.
Loving you, and being loved by you, makes me want to follow His example and do the same for
you for the rest of our lives, my loving
and much loved husband.
I wrote this for my husband a few months before we were married. He said that he loved it so much that he wanted to read part of it at our wedding reception so that our friends and family, especially those who didn't know me well, could learn a bit about the kind of woman he married.
It backfired though. People started to laugh, and the more he read, the more they laughed. My aunt came up to me later and said I should have been a comedian because what I wrote was SO funny. Both my husband and I were perplexed. Neither one of us could figure out why people thought this was so funny.
A friend said she thought it was too personal and that people couldn't handle the candidness of what I had expressed. In the end, the only people who need to know how sincere I was are my husband and I. I love him more than I ever thought it possible to love another human being. And I want to share that with the whole world.
