How can I change my past?

Updated on November 10, 2015

The past

What is today becomes past tomorrow. We usually tend to forget that and regret our actions later on in life. Every one of us has a past which they would like to amend. They say you cannot change your past but what if we could roll back and change all the wrongs and do the course corrections? Nothing better than that.

What I am trying to post here is something related to my past. I have come to a stage in my life where I can feel a bit of stagnancy. Both professionally and personally. I cannot compete with the so called younger generation and my children have grown up to take care of themselves. So it is time to do some retrospection.

it is important to have ups and downs in life. With every success we become buoyant and want to go ahead in life. Similarly with each failure we get a chance to sit back reflect and make new strategies. But when we are young we dread the word failure. We are only concerned about results. We don't like coming even close second. We use all means to be successful in life. We have different measurement for success at that time. And to achieve it we sometimes end up the wrong route.

If Only I could change my past

They said..Don’t look back think about your future

Tomorrow is what you need to nurture

But history is something that will repeat

That is a fact which no one can beat

So I looked at my past

To learn from the mistakes I did last

What I saw made me sad

So many of my decisions were irrational and bad

So many opportunities went waste

Just to compete that silly race

I was always in a haste

I always asked forgot to give

Only wanted to live and and not let live

Success was my only goal

Behind it I put my heart and soul

Always thought of profit and gain

Let virtue go down the drain

Now when I look at that stage

There are so many things I would want to change

And think in my mind Alas

If Only I could change my past

Thanks Audrey Hunt and Audrey Selig.. Yes we cannot change our past and can only learn from it but its human nature to sometimes feel that if and only if we could.. and that is what i tried to portray here

Siva - I like your poem, and the idea about changing some things from the past. It leads me to a question I may ask. I might have changed some parts of my past, but for the most part, I would not. We can learn from the past to change the future. It would be nice if we could change one thing through a special wish. I wonder if your poem is about you or just a poem. Whatever it is, you have a way with words. Blessings,

We are who we presently are because of the past. There are no mistakes in life - just choices. But for certain "mistakes" I have made in my life I would not have the miracles I am so grateful for today.

As far as the pain goes...we can choose to hold on to that pain or forgive ourselves or others and move on living only in the present. As for myself, I choose to thank my past for all I have learned and live only in the moment.

Thank you for your hub. Sharing.

Yes you are right what has to happen will happen so have to take things as they come. Yes if there were some downs then there were several ups too.

It was not not just a poem at random and something I truly feel. There are some things of my past which gives me a lot of pain but past is past and yes I am trying to move on.

Siva..Your poem is written well and I'm sure has made many of your readers look back and "think."

I'm hoping it was just a poem at random and not something you truly feel within.

It would take far too much time for me to express all I'd like you to know, so very briefly, allow me to say........................

My hope for you is that you do not "regret." The book of our Life has many pages, many chapters and continues on until the final page. You are who you are for the experiences of your past.....good and bad, successes and failures. Everything we say and do and all that we are and have is the result of our past.

Those who have touched our lives made a difference and taught us to touch back. Whether they also brought pain is not to regret but to celebrate. Through that pain you grew and gained strength.

Do-overs and re-takes are only possible in movies which are scripted, directed and edited.....This is not real life but fantasy.

Real life produces REAL human beings and what is most important to peace and happiness is to be REAL......UP+++ Peace, Paula

I enjoyed your poem. Regret is part of the human condition. It's like a red light shining from the past and into the future that helps us avoid tripping over our mistakes quite so much.

I've experienced lots of terrible things and I've done plenty of things I'm not proud of, but if I could change my past, I wouldn't. I couldn't bear to.

Any change, no matter how tiny would change the minute-to-minute way my life played out after it. Just walking down a different street many years ago would have prevented something horrible from happening to me, something that left me physically and emotionally scarred, but then the clock of my life would be different. That clock and life aren't just mine.

I saved a life by accidentally being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. If my life's clock were changed by so much as a minute in either direction, that man would likely be dead. Most of the worst things that I've ever experienced or done occurred before that night so changing any of them would change what happened and when. Things happen in our lives, sometimes in fractions of a second, that can change them forever.

On a more selfish note, I may have never been in the right place at the right time to meet my beloved and, through him, the woman who is like a sister to me if my past were changed even a little.

Think about how many things had to happen just the way they did to result in you having the people you love around you. Think of all the times you've been in the right place at the right time for someone else. Regret is a kind of pain that helps us learn.

      Hello Siva222,

Great poem, we all have things we would like to change, but unfortunately we didn't usually have all the knowledge we had at the time we made our mistakes.

I can answer a few, quick questions of Astrology for you if you ask on a hub related to your Sunsign. Or you can find me at I spend 10 hours on a complete chart, so can't do that for free. But I can help out if it's an emergency.

Its Ok. in a way a clean heart will be a new heart as it will be void of all negatives and will be full of love and inspiration and liking and positivity. So it is as good as new. :)

Hello Siva, it's okay, just keep on living, moving forward. You have enough to do just maintaining right... This was an excellent written poem. I was surprised when you broke out into the poem. Create in me a new heart (by hubbess Dana Tate) the past is null and void. Great Job!

Very insightful hub with deep meaningful words and advice!

Its important to move on in life. One should not carry the baggage of the unpleasant past, if any. We should rather learn from our past mistakes and move forward in life.

Thanks for sharing and voted up!

Thanks for your insightful comment. Yes you are right. We do need to look at the future and learn from our mistakes in the past and not make the same mistakes in the future. Also have written two more hubs.

Also wrote two more hubs.. I killed the snake cause it came to our house and A few facts about Hinduism. Would like to know your thoughts about them too.

Hi Siva, I like this poem and I can relate the sentiments to my own life. I do have regrets that I would change if I had the opportunity to go back. However we have to put them aside and look ahead to the future at the things we can influence. Hopefully we have learnt from our past mistakes. Voted up and shared.
