Independent In Love : A poem about indipendence in relationships

Don't baby me
Don't prod and poke and fuss over me
Don't stand over my shoulder to monitor what I'm doing
Don't tell me step-by-step what to do
How to do it
When to do it
Why to do it
Where to do it
Who to do it with
I've been working hard for my independence
And independence is sweet
Please don't take that away from me
Don’t expect me to stop working
To stay and look after house and home
I know there's nothing wrong with that
But hey, that just isn't me
I've been tied up, locked down and covered for too long
I want something exciting and new
Explore with me
Teach me something cool
Show me your world
Share mine with me
We'll get to forever when forever comes
Till then, lets just work on here and now.
Tell me when I'm wrong
We need to guide each other along
Tell me when you're proud of me
Let me know when I make you mad
Or sad
Or make you feel like giving up
I'm not as abrasive as I seem to be
You know that
You know that I'm willing to take corrections
You know I'm willing to learn
So don't just stand there and sulk
Like the child you're not
Tell me what you like
You want me to start?
Fine, I'll start
I like to hide and eat chocolate
Yeah, I know I shouldn't have it
I like it when you hold my hand
I like it when you laugh
I like watching you play
I like it when you help me
I like the way you smile
When I do something crazy and impulsive
I like it when you get me gifts
Just because you care
Don't think because I'm independent I don't want to be spoiled
I like it when you spoil me
When you take me to a nice dinner or party
When you buy me something nice and simple and neat
When you surprise me with trip
When you make me a romantic dinner
When you respect my independence
'Cause I'm independently in love
Loving independently
Independent in love
Description
The pleas of a modern woman in love. She is independent and likes having her own way. In the poem "Independent In Love", the woman is appealing to her lover to respect her independence while not letting that deter him from being a true gentleman and a romantic companion.
Embracing her new-found freedom from a past that was sad and restricting, she is longing to take life one day at a time. She wants her life and her relationship to be exciting, adventurous and fun.
She likes things to be 'simple and neat' and does not expect her partner to completely change his personality or to go out of his way to impress and satisfy her. All she asks is that he plays an active part in their relationship as partners instead of treating her as a subordinate.
