Insomnia! - A Poem That Can't Sleep

Updated on January 5, 2013

So

A sleepless night

I've tried lying in my bed,

I just couldn't get any comfort

And I was restless in my head!

I tossed and turned, sighed loudly,

And made the occasional yawn,

Too hot, too cold, not sleepy,

I could lie this way till dawn!

Hmmm

This won't do,

I have a busy day ahead,

As the night goes on

I fear I'll face the coming day with dread!

Right that's it! I'm getting up,

I'm getting out of bed,

I'll have a hot and milky drink,

That should rest my head!

OK

I've had my drink now,

And very nice it tasted too,

But instead of feeling tired,

Now I need the loo!

So once I've done my business

I consider lying down,

But I glance up at the ceiling

And what I see just makes me frown!

Cobweb!

Oh dear!

This place really needs a dust,

It's probably not the time,

But really now I must!

So I do a bit of cleaning,

As quietly as I can,

Dust and polish (not hoover though)

I don't want to wake the clan...

Right

That's it!

I must try to get some sleep,

Don't look at the computer

Or my book that's really deep!

I am a little peckish though

Have I anything to munch?

I'll make myself a sandwich

And while I'm at it, tomorrows packed lunch!

Yawn!

I'm feeling tired now,

Perhaps I'll go lie down,

I rest my head and start to snooze

But what's that awful sound?

Oh! It's my alarm clock,

Telling me it's time to rise,

So up I get, feeling like,

I never shut my eyes!

      Jennifer,

Great work. Loved it. I am writing (at times) abstract poetry. Not everyone can get into the facet of abstract poetry for it is mingled with metaphoric imaging and some symbolism.

I want your feedback on my latest hub: "My Lover, My Liar," an abstract/prose poem on . . .well, you tell me.

      Peace.

      Keep up the great work.

I know all about insomnia. A condition ripe for poetic parody.

      Wonderful poem.

......well dear Jennifer I sincerely hope you had a nice, safe and happy day at work and I just woke up from night shift sleep with my first cup of coffee at lake erie time 1:09pm with both cats outside on our deck.

November is our gateway month here for winter.

Actually I love Guinness so I will try to pick up a four pack today.

They sell it in cans over here and it's obviously not the same as drinking it in a pub but you still get the same taste.

Yes there's nothing like fresh fish and chips - the frozen ones just aren't the same. I also like Chinese food and a good homemade stir fry.

For a bachelor I am not a bad cook at all.

My cats eat very well though courtesy of their big daddy - lol.

Yes I am quite familiar with Withnail and I (and a legendary performance by Richard Grant) and I have grown up with Monty Python over the years.

Some of my favorite films are Blue Velvet by David Lynch, A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick and Taxi Driver by Martin Scorcese and a lovely English film called Distant Voices, Past Lives by Terence Davis ......

I too love a lot of music 'outside' of the mainstream although I am not familiar with your list (which is exciting because I will check these names out) but I always start my day with classical music - right now is J.S. Bach's piano works. As you know I love jazz and I would recommend to you anything by John Zorn. I am a big fan of the blues and traditional music from around the world - and I have rock and roll in my bloodstream - I think You Tube is a modern wonder of the world - they have 'everything' - I am a big fan of songwriters like Warren Zevon, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Brian Wilson, Ray Davies of the Kinks and they all influence my writing - I will continue my list for another day dear Jennifer - this could go on forever - yes I love a good cognac or a stiff shot of Jack Daniels but with my blood pressure I have to be careful - lol

Sending you warm wishes and good energy from Canada 1:19pm lake erie where the sun is shining but high winds and whitecaps on the lake today making it look like an ocean

Morning Epi my good friend! Always makes me smile when you pay me a visit... :-) and now you've got me started on Monty Python quotes in my head... lol (Blessed are the cheesemakers...) :-D

The best fish and chips come from a little town called Hythe on the SE coast England... also (remarkably) an incredible spam fritter! lol Favourite nightcap... hmmm tough one, I like a brandy as long as it's a nice one... but a bottle of Old Speckled Hen (real light ale) never fails to send me of into the land of slumber, it takes me all evening to drink it though so strictly speaking, it's not really a nightcap!

Favourite film.. there is a cult British comedy called Withnail and I, also one directed by Shane Meadows is Dead Man's Shoes... in fact I love anything by Shane Meadows usually! I unashamedly love the Saw movies (sorry!) and I'm a secret Star Trek fan but don't tell... lol. Oh.. and Mary Poppins! (I know the words to all the songs lol) :-D

Ok, I left music till last because I rarely listen to "pop", I have very wide and varied tastes in music but very little of it is mainstream... check out Belleruche, Parov Stelar, Caravan Palace, Kormac (Word Play album) to name but a few!

Phew... that's lot's about me! lol So c'mon, what are your favourite films and music, and what do you eat while I'm eating fish and chips?

All the best at 11.08am (late for work, oops) Good energies coming at ya from the riverbank, Jennifer

....I become very sleepless when I think of you Jennifer - and it's my best waking time ever - lol - just arrived home from night shift at 4:34am and listening to mother- fooking loud heavy soul music which is scaring the fish in the lake (they're wearing ear plugs)

and wishing you well for your incredible wit and poetic candor and friendship

Eat, drink and be merry - keep listening to hot jazz and do you like Monty Python. the Goon show and what is the best fish and chips you've ever tasted? Favorite nightcap? (beverage) and what is your favorite pop/rock group of all time and favorite film?
