I close my eyes to go to sleep

I listen as my heart beats

I hear the ringing in my ears

A noise that once brought me to tears

Is now a bedtime lullaby

Helping the minutes pass by

I hear in the distance a train

An echo of my sleepless pain

I hear a lonely dog’s bark

Just another sound in the dark

As I try to drift to slumber land

I feel a wet nose upon my hand

My faithful friend, protecting me

As we both try to sleep
