Into The Unknown------Short Story

Updated on December 9, 2016

My name is Ruby. I write poetry, flash fiction and short stories. I am a dreamer who believes in equality for all mankind.

Heaven's Gate swung open and he entered. Young and eager to explore a galaxy he'd never seen before. He was dressed in his silver pressure suit, his ACE wings displayed proudly.

A voice said, " Welcome John, we've been patiently waiting for you. "

John looked around and thought, " This is so beautiful. The stars within reach. I'm glad I'm not traveling at warp speed. "

Suddenly he heard some familiar voice's and turned around to see Neil, Alan, Gus, Scott and Cooper walking toward him.

They looked exactly like they did the last time they studied flight engineering so many years ago. They all embraced and cried tears of joy, so happy to finally be back together again.

They then heard a deep voice say, " Are you boys ready to go for a spin? You've explored the galaxies and even walked on the moon, but was restricted from entering this heavenly zone. "

Their voice's echoed an excited, happy " Yes "

The spaceship was silver with the words Friendship 7 painted on the side. They were astonished that the ship had no engine as they glided through the most beautiful universe, even touching the Milky Way as it passed by. Gravity was nonexistent!

People were laughing and waving.

Their joy for flying had come full circle. They now would be able to explore like never before. Orbiting the earth was peanuts compared to this spectacular journey.

John was remembering his childhood dreams of someday reaching the unknown in the-wild-blue-yonder and realized his dreams had truly come true.

Wow, Ruby ...this is so cool! I love it so much!

I'm so happy he is continuing his journey through the heavenlies.

I've been absent from HubPages due to my hubby having knee replacement surgery and other life issues, but I do hope to return to write soon.

Hello Dana. Your comment humbles me. Thank you. I'm afraid my attention span is short. I don't think I could ever write a novel, but you thinking I possibly could is more than inspiring. Thanks again...

I remember growing up after WWII and discovering science fiction. Everybody told me that it would be impossible to go to the moon even. In one sense, they were right. It could not have been done with the technology of the times. But we later found it could be done and more.

How much is Mike paying you to pimp his hubs?? LOL! Is he hiring? I could use the Christmas cash!

Seriously...thanks for letting me know. Lately I'm slow on the draw & not spending as much time here as I would like. Honestly Ruby, I could literally sit in front of this screen ALL day if I didn't force myself away.

I have had visions of my son coming in the house and not being able to plow through the debris to find me in the office.....!!! Like an episode of "Hoarders, Buried Alive!!" Help!

Paula, your comments are so sweet. A man in uniform catches my eye's too. John Glenn was a true hero. His life story is amazing. He loved what he did. Be sure and read Mike's story of him and his soulmate Annie. Thank you so much. Hugs...

Ruby...you write the BEST flash fiction! I love Lee Greenwood's song and I have a special affinity for the U.S Marine Corps!! Their uniform is amazing. Whenever I see a young handsome Marine in his dress blues, my eyes fill with tears. I guess I'm a sucker for a man in uniform.

This is an A+ short story...keep 'em coming. Hugs, Paula

      John Glenn....R.I.P.

Me too Bill, shucks, I would run like the wind away from anything going into space. It took a special person to do it. I watched a documentary of his life, and he pretended to fly as a child, running through fields with his arms outstretched. Thanks for the visit...

I was thinking, yesterday, how much courage it took to go up in that rocket for the first time...he must have felt fear, right? Apprehension? Or was he just filled with the wonder of the moment.

Me? I would have been screaming like a baby. LOL

Wow, Ruby! This is a wonderful tribute to the first US astronaut, John Glenn, who circled around the earth two times. Only today I read this news of his demise at his age of 95 years. He made the US and the whole world proud after only Yuri Gagarin. Thank you for this beautiful story.
