Can't look upon the lifeless shell

Can't look upon the lifeless shell

This chrysalis from which you fly

Can't look upon your grave and cry

No mournful dirge, you did not die

Like passing clouds we'll say farewell

Can't look upon the lifeless shell

The sun that brightens up the gloom

Your smile, a summer rose in bloom

Can't look upon your grave and cry

Our hearts won't say the last goodbye

Say it's not true, it's just a lie

Can't look upon the lifeless shell

Bring back the shocked numbed disbelief

Before the squall of pain and grief

Can't look upon your grave and cry

Inside we rage, this isn't fair

That life goes on though you're not here

Can't look upon the lifeless shell

Can't look upon your grave and cry

Your Cousin, very nice to see you, it is very hard to look upon the shell of those we care about and know that they are truly gone. Thank you for stopping by, the visit and comment are very much appreciated.

Thought about my Big Mama when I read your poem. I'm not into funerals so when I looked upon her "lifeless shell," she just wasn't there. It is hard to say good-bye. Voted Up.

Lovely poem. I can feel the emotions. I like that you feel them in the breeze and in the sunshine etc. So they are not completely gone. We feel them in a different way. Very beautiful thoughts of someone who has passed on.

PHILLYDREAMER, sorry for the multiple choice links on you page I had a little difficulty placing it. Yes death seems so final, unless of course you're a person of strong religious faith. many thanks for the visit and comment. Best wishes.

It's hard to deal with the fact that someone you love is gone. I think I'd prefer if I never had to go through this, but I know it's something we all must do.

Beautiful poem. I liked the rhythm and repetition, it really added to the poem as a whole. The loss of someone we love is never easy to get over or let go of. I think you captured this struggle very well.
