Just Words - A Poem

Updated on January 31, 2013
Source

First some thoughts

Occur to me,

At different points

Throughout the day,

Words and

Rhymes

With clever twists

Things I'll forget

When it comes to it...

So then I

STOP!

Sit down

And write,

And try to remember

With all my might

The clever things

I thought that day

Subjects

And jokes

Just gone away...

Hmmm

Let's see

A title first!

And a first line

To start the burst

Of words and

Phrases

On my page

Sometimes

Surprised

By the barrage

Of words

That happen

By themselves

As if imprisoned

In a cell

Within a thing I call my

Brain

Then freed

By pencil...

Am I insane?

No,

Just a little nuts

Good job really

Crafty cuts

Of time

That I don't really have

Just to write

So I can save

Or rescue is a better

Word,

The words from prison

To be heard.

Jennifer, very cool poem. I always try to keep a pen and pad around because lyrics come to my mind throughout the day. If I don't, I would forget them forever. Can you only imagine all the great things that have come to mind and have been forgotten? Voted up, awesome, and interesting Jennifer. Shared also.

Thanks Jan! :-) I can often be seen to be muttering away to myself, maybe a dictating machine is the answer... then I wouldn't get so many funny looks.... lol

Best wishes from the riverbank, Jen

This poem describes excatly how a writer needs to think. I have a dictating machine and if something comes to mind, out it comes and I talk away! On a couple of occasions in the past I've thought of something in the middle of the night and then forgot; so now keep a note pad ready!

Loved this poem really good, and voted up,

To Shinngirisheyes, whonunuwho, Bill, Valleypoet, Kashmir56, bravewarrior, Debbie and Mhatter99.... Thank you all so much for your very kind words and for stopping to read my poem, feelin' a little soppy this morning, and (sadly) in a bit of a rush, so transatlantic cyber hugs coming to each and every one of you... oops... Valleypoet, I've pulled yours back from the Atlantic and sent it "up North"... :-)

All the best from the wet and soggy riverbank in England, Jen

Yep, that's about the epitome of a poem! A first line comes into your head, you grab your pen and notebook and let 'er rip! If you wait, it's lost!

Interesting poem and one whose message is received well by all who write lines that rhyme. Many of my thoughts come to me in the middle of the night and I often forget them if I don't arise from my bed and write them down. Thanks for sharing this work.

Ah yes Epi, I do love jazz having been brought up by a jazz musician (dad plays trumpet... :-) ) and I also love swing because I love to dance! There is a time and a place for all sorts of music I agree. I have heard of those magazines but never got round to checking them out, I'll make a point of doing so! 10.32am and it's just stopped raining so may go to work.... ;-)

Beautiful thoughts! I usually get them in the middle of the night, and I don't want to get up and write, and by morning it's GONE! Lol..... Story of my life.

      Voting up and simply awesome!

...yes I have an old adage Jennifer - no Led Zeppelin before 12 noon when I wake up in the morning - I always start my day with light classical music and then progress from there during the day - although that said, lol, I've been known to blast some rock and roll on the way home in the car at 3am-5am and my drive in because I am a creature of habit is 'my clear my head and collect my thoughts' hour of driving where I am just quiet with no music (although sometimes I listen to the all news channel for the weather - or the end of the world announcements -lol)

...but yes big big jazz fan - I know over in the U.K. there is a big demand for jazz and the blues - are you familiar with two great magazines from the U.K - Uncut and Mojo - if not , check them out online - they're awesome - 5:19am (jazz and classical and soundtrack music is great for writing too)

Hi Epi, good to see you! Thanks for reading my little poem :-) Loving your taste in music by the way... My summer was full of madness, festivals, sunshine and monsoons... :-) not sure what to expect from the coming seasons but I know I need the rain to stop so I can go and do some work on some peoples gardens!! (I have a feeling winter's gonna be a cold one... wood burner already lit!) Warm thoughts and good energy coming right back at ya from the river bank in England, all the best, Jen

Hi Jennifer - just arrived home safe and sound from night shift to my two best friends Little Miss Tiffy and Mister Gabriel and to your wonderful poem about the creative process (as maddening and frustrating as it can be sometimes) which pretty well says it all - and should be a primer for all writers young and old; experienced and novice to read ..... hubbravo from the epi-man who is listening to some nice jazz with Chet Baker and Art Pepper and a couple of beers and warm wishes and good energy sent to you from lake erie time canada 5:01am and how was your summer? What do you expect for your fall and winter - weather wise?
