Nightsong - A Poem
Songs in the deepest night
There are those times and places which cannot be recreated or duplicated. Whimsical feelings are stirred by such memories as those which spring to mind, with the soft kiss of a gentle breeze as it brushes against one’s face. Taking in the scent of evening; different from that of the day.. Sight becomes diminished as our other senses pick up the lack and become more acute. In the other world of midnight beings, enigmatic creatures emerge, populating the very ground upon which we tread during daylight hours. As I observe, in my solitude; the stealth, nocturnal wildlife come alive as the sun sets and the earth takes on a new flavor; a different glow where natural factors prevail as the denizens of the dark occupy our familiar daytime environment; I am removed from the limitations of day. This is their time; their habitat and their right to live within this enchanting realm. I am reminded of my place in the spectrum of life; and the very fact that the beautiful animals with whom we share this earth also deserve recognition of significance.
Removed from the everyday responsibilities and things which pull our attention away from the pure wonder of life and fantastic orb on which we stand; our celestial home; an awareness of the enormity and magnificence of life…all life, emerges.
I shall miss this part of my time in SE Kansas…the quiet, serene, wide open spaces which are home to so many different beings.
NIGHTSONG
Quiet wafts of wind touch my face
As I sit, alone, in this still place
Gentle whisper of nearby trees
Speak softly, sweetly in the summer breeze
Subtle nature surrounds me here
Peaceful scene, the view so clear
Cotton clouds drift soundlessly by
In a perfect, flawless, pale blue sky
Dusk approaches the day’s last light
Ushering in the imminence of night
Distant voices of creatures’ call
Darkness protects both large and small
Secretly I listen, in solitude, I see
This life that is not meant for me
Hidden mystery of earth’s inhabitants
As they begin their nightly dance
Silently I watch, separate and apart
As nature unfolds, from the start
Of evening’s slightest hint of the day’s last light
And gently eases into the magic of night.
Inky darkness surrounds me now
Still, I cannot leave, somehow
Senses spellbound by sound and sight
Will not allow me to depart this night
Wonderment is everywhere
Thrilling excitement in the air
I have not a concern; nor a care
As I watch a world I cannot share
With the beautiful beings of the night
This is their time; this is their right
To live as they are meant,
On ground or in flight,
In those hours just beyond twilight.
Concealed, hidden where I don’t belong
Listening to the melody of this night song
Music of life in so many ways
Fills the night before the break of day.
I fear that I have rudely intruded
In a world where I am not included
Where life takes on a different shape and form
And carries on as is the norm
Unimportant am I and my own kind
In this other world of which I find
Will live forever in my mind
When departure comes
And I leave it far, far behind.
