Songs in the deepest night

There are those times and places which cannot be recreated or duplicated. Whimsical feelings are stirred by such memories as those which spring to mind, with the soft kiss of a gentle breeze as it brushes against one’s face. Taking in the scent of evening; different from that of the day.. Sight becomes diminished as our other senses pick up the lack and become more acute. In the other world of midnight beings, enigmatic creatures emerge, populating the very ground upon which we tread during daylight hours. As I observe, in my solitude; the stealth, nocturnal wildlife come alive as the sun sets and the earth takes on a new flavor; a different glow where natural factors prevail as the denizens of the dark occupy our familiar daytime environment; I am removed from the limitations of day. This is their time; their habitat and their right to live within this enchanting realm. I am reminded of my place in the spectrum of life; and the very fact that the beautiful animals with whom we share this earth also deserve recognition of significance.

Removed from the everyday responsibilities and things which pull our attention away from the pure wonder of life and fantastic orb on which we stand; our celestial home; an awareness of the enormity and magnificence of life…all life, emerges.

I shall miss this part of my time in SE Kansas…the quiet, serene, wide open spaces which are home to so many different beings.

Quiet wafts of wind touch my face

As I sit, alone, in this still place

Gentle whisper of nearby trees

Speak softly, sweetly in the summer breeze

Subtle nature surrounds me here

Peaceful scene, the view so clear

Cotton clouds drift soundlessly by

In a perfect, flawless, pale blue sky

Dusk approaches the day’s last light

Ushering in the imminence of night

Distant voices of creatures’ call

Darkness protects both large and small

Secretly I listen, in solitude, I see

This life that is not meant for me

Hidden mystery of earth’s inhabitants

As they begin their nightly dance

Silently I watch, separate and apart

As nature unfolds, from the start

Of evening’s slightest hint of the day’s last light

And gently eases into the magic of night.

Inky darkness surrounds me now

Still, I cannot leave, somehow

Senses spellbound by sound and sight

Will not allow me to depart this night

Wonderment is everywhere

Thrilling excitement in the air

I have not a concern; nor a care

As I watch a world I cannot share

With the beautiful beings of the night

This is their time; this is their right

To live as they are meant,

On ground or in flight,

In those hours just beyond twilight.

Concealed, hidden where I don’t belong

Listening to the melody of this night song

Music of life in so many ways

Fills the night before the break of day.

I fear that I have rudely intruded

In a world where I am not included

Where life takes on a different shape and form

And carries on as is the norm

Unimportant am I and my own kind

In this other world of which I find

Will live forever in my mind

When departure comes

And I leave it far, far behind.

KduBarry03, I wrote this one a while ago; before I left SE Kansas where the nights are so magical. I have a little farm there (still do...planning to visit soon) and, having moved from a more populated area filled with the sounds of civilization; to my rural, isolated farm; the 'nightsong' in SE Kansas presented a thoroughly new and exciting feeling. It is vibrant w/so many sounds of creatures, large and small; who come to life when the sun sets. I am so glad you liked this...I am enthralled with and moved emotionally by the magic of nature. Kathy

Augustine! I just noticed your visit which was months ago...I am just now seeing and always, I appreciate your support and presence which underscores my efforts. Thank you! Kathy

Ah, the beauty of nature in a great collection of words. Well done, Lucky Cats. I highly enjoyed this poem. The essence of true nature and animals of the night fill my mind with great imagery.

      Voted up and pinned!

It is probably sounds totally crazy but for a moment while I was reading this lovely poem I felt like I was looking through the eyes of a cat, like it was kitties thoughts entirely... I loved it that way too! There is so many sides to these deep thoughts really. I love it, it is like a song!

One night, I sat on the front porch in SE Kansas, out on a 2.5 mile long dirt road...totally isolated except for the night creatures; night sounds. I was 'removed' from the present..transported by the beauty and serenity...the completely 'other' nature of this time of night. I've since moved from there..but still have the farm and intend to visit now and then.

Thank you, again, Beyond Max...for such wonderful words for my work...very sincerely appreciated.

Hello Nat Amaral. I am honored and happy to read your kind comment. Night time is a magical, special time which, when observed, is wondrous as well as exciting. Thank for the sweet words about the baby kitten. This is of Smoky Mama's 5 babies (SM was abandoned in the streets, very very pregnant and in need of help.....she found us and now, she and her babies are living the good life in N. California)

naturalsolutions...very nice name..I am very honored that you visited this poem a second time...that is very complimentary...thank you so much. I love the night sounds; I always leave my windows open so that all the rustling of wind in the trees, calls from the creatures who live near the pond and other night sounds can soothe me to sleep. My favorite music.

Saddlerider...if anyone understands and relates to this; I would know that it is you and ahorseback. Nature and wonder that you appreciate so much. So sensitive and so keenly aware of the world around you; the magic, the mystical and illusory side of this life. Thank you so very much!

Nasseralabdali, caseworker, friends....I am thrilled and pleased and humbled by your words and kindness.

Seeker...I know you live in the otherworld of our existence (this sounds really 'out there' but, it's true...I know)...the beauty which is not everyday in our lives...the unknown...the surprise and delight of another aspect of this life which we do not inhabit as much as that of our routine; our daily lives

thank you so much for the depth of your kind comments.

Yes indeed the beauty of the night, it's a creatures delight, predators take flight and beckon for the night as the sun sinks below with delight. All the nocturnal come alive and thrive in the night's offerings. To be truly alive one must be one with the night, have no fear of it, bathe in it's beauty for it is short.

This was a beautiful piece LuckyCats, I senses your sadness though as you prepare to depart from a place you hold so dear in your life. I wish for whatever the reason for change is, that your heart and soul stay intact and your new surroundings become one with you as did this beautiful state of Kansas. May peace and blessings follow you to your new home.

Beautifully constructed poem that captures the mysterious allure of nature after dark...

Far from leaving this behind, you will always carry this place and time in your heart, to be relived over and over again...To dredge up when times are difficult, to ponder over a morning coffee, or just to fall asleep with that last, lingering thought...

Ahorseback, of all the people who read this, I believe you will relate the most...your poems and prose about Arizona and the beautiful desert; the way in which you describe the scenery (really loved the sail boat set in the sand w/the family aboard; gazing out ahead as if at sea!!)...and the heart w/which you write of your love for the stark, colorful, sandscape of the desert....assured me that you would love this imagery, too. thank you so much and, your question. Hi, that was amazing! I could see all the creatures of the night, and feel your sadness that you have to leave them. As you said, we forget in the day time the other part of our lives that go on in the night, and that is when the sadness comes, because even though we may not know the animals and creatures, they have been a part of our world and then that is the time that you will miss them, awesome! rated up everything!

      suzettenaples...thank you for visiting and the thoughtful comment. I believe there are parts of this world which are far better off if we humans keep a respectful just isn't our place to interject ourselves into the lives of other living beings.       A glorious homage to the animals of the night. One can walk about during the day and almost believe they're alone out-side of the birds, squirrels and insects. But at dusk the children of the moon come alive. You've captured one who cares to have a look into this world perfectly Kathy. Wish you could take it with you. But at least you've partaken of its wonders. Gorgeous poem to reflect on.}{

Darkness - It's amazing how differently our minds perceive it at different times. Sometimes it simply scares us with all the unknown hidden mysteries, yet there are times when we would want to sit and let the night share it's magic with us. :) A beautiful hub, apt image and great poetry - amazing rhyme and rhythm.
