Don't Give Up The Fight

Updated on September 18, 2013
Source
Source

Beautiful heart and brilliant mind
Hindered by illness undefined
Should the demon have a name
The havoc wreaked would be the same

Body betrays heart and mind
Mind betrays the body in kind

Tired as if turned to stone
Pain burrows into deepest bone
Sadness shakes straight through to core
Fear grips tightly more and more

But even when you feel like dying
Please don’t ever give up trying

Do not fear the black of night
Darkness must give way to light
So hunker down for one more fight
No dreams of giving up tonight

Tomorrow’s light will find you stronger
To wage the war a little longer

Til comes the day you find yourself
Once more back to better health
The things that you had put aside
You rise to meet them like the tide

And what if darkness creeps back in
You will surely win again

The person that you know you are
Will pierce the darkness like a star
With what was there from very start
Brilliant mind and beautiful heart

AudraLeigh - you are so kind. Part of my motivation in writing this was to give a voice to people like us that can't find the words to express how they feel. To let them know that they aren't alone and that things will be ok. And maybe those that don't understand will gain some insight too....

      Love you too, sis! :)

i have a good family and many of us are very close. my brother is surrounded by a lot of love. i told him last night that some of my "good writer friends" have asked about him and shared support - he was very appreciative of it. as you can imagine, he gets down sometimes. things like that really lift him up. thank you.

      Dana, what brilliant insite. I know to well the pain of chronic illness watching it in loved ones and enduring it myself. It is indeed a feeling of desperation that plunges one into the darkness. You have captured those feelings through beautiful writing. I was captivated by the first line and with the last stanza I fell in love with your poem;

"The person that you know you are

Will pierce the darkness like a star

With what was there from very start

Dana: Your wonderful poetry brought Dylan Thomas' emotive poem to mind, so I put it here for us all to share. The poem, (Dylan's) speaks more to the aged looking into the fact of their imminent passing, but the thread of defiance and courage runs through your own work

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT

      Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

      Dylan Thomas

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? The eternal question for those who are down and out, or ill, or both. The darkness can, indeed, seem so oppressive that it crushes the breath right out of a person, and the will to continue the fight flickers at best.

And yet we keep moving forward....always forward.
