Ode to the Little Penguin
By: Wayne Brown
Life is a difficult process that seems to keep us turned upside down
We all need to climb off the edge, just relax and lay around
That’s a hard thing to do these days no matter the mindset you’re in
So I suggest you go right out on the street and seek “The Little Penguin”
He’s a great little guy packaged in bottles both large and small
He’ll work his wonders; relieve your ills, and calm you down, ya’ll
The taste is consistent and superb especially in light of the meager cost
Finding “The Little Penguin” is like renewing an old friendship lost
I sip it from a large mouth glass so I can take in the flower and bouquet
I drink it on special occasions of all types and at the end of each day
He is a pleasurable little fellow with a flavor that is always true
No matter what the occasion, “The Little Penguin” will always do
Oh Little Penguin, Little Penguin, the juice of your grapes is so fine
Might you be the best of values on all those shelves of wine?
The golden tone of your Chardonnay is so easy on the eye
Oh Little Penguin, Little Penguin, who says you birds can’t fly?
There are others who have discovered the pleasure of your company
For a long time it seemed that no one knew, a secret between you and me
Many times now when I look for you on the shelf of my grocery lair
I find that others who know your pleasure have left the shelf bare
I try to stock up on your pleasures and keep your gold in my glass
I relish the liquidity of your treasures as I take of my repast
What a friend you have quietly been; a uniqueness in my long sojourn
To find just the right place on paper for the words in my head that burn
Oh Little Penguin, Little Penguin, you ask nothing for your steadfastness
What a true friend you turned out to be to the last drop of your lastness
I’ll keep you with me in the hope that our journey will be the best
Other wines will come and go but Little Penguin will survive time’s test
Oh the stately image of my little black and white, short-winged friend
Shining on the label as I find your stock upon the shelves once again
Though the demand for your nectar may at times cause you to depart
I know you will return to the shelf really soon; I know it in my heart!
Little Penguin, Little Penguin, I pray that you will never slip asunder
That your golden nectar will long be by my side with the words I ponder
Little Penguin, Little Penguin, you ask nothing for your delicate treasures
Except that I enjoy your company and partake of your golden pleasures
Here’s to “The Little Penguin!”
