OH NUTS TO YOU! by b. Malin

Updated on September 22, 2011
Nutsy the Squirrel
Nutsy the Squirrel

Before I start this little tale, I must tell you that Lover Man and I live on what is called a "Barrier Island" here on the Jersey Shore. Having said that I will tell you that we have Rabbits here, and So far, ONE Squirrel on our Island. This story is about the ONE Squirrel, so sit back, grab a Peanut or two, as I fill you in.

We bought this little House about three years ago and Love it here. We are surrounded by the bay and the Ocean which meet eight blocks away...As I've stated it is an Island with two ways off, a small Bridge or the Black Horse Pike Bridge...Which can Flood when it rains. So I ask, how did this little Squirrel get here. Did he hitchhike? He doesn't seem to have Friends (other Squirrels) or a Family...It's just him. And HE THINKS HE OWNS THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

On year one, a few days after we moved in, I am driving home from the Super Market, coming slowly down the block. Mr. Squirrel is standing ( I swear) in the middle of the street eating a Peanut. I gently honk my horn. He looks at me and continues to munch on his NUT...ever so slowly chewing it and staring at me. I get out of the car and say "Hey, do you mind"? Yes, I am standing there talking to this Squirrel and he in turn is IGNORING ME. I tap my foot to show my Indignation, as he seems to be washing off his face and hands before giving me one last LOOK as he turns... He gives me "The Tail", before running off down the middle of the street. I later relay the story to Lover Man as we unpack the groceries and have a good laugh.

We get some home repairs done, and also put up a New White Vinyl Fence. The top of the Fence is flat, so I am able to hang a few Flower Baskets from it. Everything is shaping up nicely. Well my little Squirrel Friend is back running the Fence... Like HE owns it...If I didn't know better I'd think he was getting his Exercise by running back and forth. Once in awhile he stops and stands up to look at us with his little hands on his if he's studying US!

Year two, we decide to enclose the deck making an "outdoor" room out of it. Spring, through Summer, it is delightful to be able to eat our meals out there, and "Nutsy", we have given our little friend a name, usually knows what time we eat, and comes by to run the Fence...He's really become quite entertaining. Lover Man thinks "Nutsy" got a thing for me...I tell him, He's NUTS!...That Squirrel cares for NO ONE, but HIMSELF and where is next Nut is coming from.

None of the Neighbors like to admit it, but someone is giving "Nutsy" Nuts, which to my surprise, one day, as I am gardening, I come upon his Garbage. Nutsy has taken to leaving his shells near my Rose Bushes...or actually wherever he pleases. It's like his calling card to Me to say, Ha, Ha, I was here. So of course I have to pick up after him. Sometimes out of frustration I will say aloud, "this has got to stop Nutsy" and from out of nowhere he appears. Lover Man thinks he likes the sound of my voice...Well, I'm not feeding him EVER... and when we leave for Florida in December, he'll probably stand in the middle of the street and wave Goodbye...Before giving us "The Tail", as he runs down the middle of the street. And I'll say, silently to myself, stay safe my little friend through the Winter...Until we see you again next Spring.

Hi Alocsin, probably Not...but who knows the Squirrels always seem to go for the Bird Feeders...But maybe someone should invent a Squirrel Feeder...Wana try?

Are there any such things as squirrel feeding devices, like bird feeders? Maybe your neighbors have one. Voting this Up and Funny.

Nighthag, "Nutsy" is his own Person...But somehow, someway, he had allowed me into his world...If he knew that I was writing about him, he'd probably want to be paid in Peanuts!

I'm in "Ventnor" Heights on the Southern Jersey Shore, Gina and we LOVE it here...and as far as I can tell "Nutsy" is the only Squirrel...and I think he likes it that way...Surrounded by the Bay and the Ocean 8 Blocks away. Knowing him, he probably Sun's himself at the Beach!

      Hey B.

Nutsy is not alone; squirrels seem to have this keen sense of who is “good people” and he obviously knows you are among them. They are also very brash and come and go as they please. But Nutsy has definitely found a friend. I loved this gem of a story, and look forward to hearing more. :-)

Barrier Islands? Sandy Hook by any chance? I grew up in the northwest section of Jersey, in the mountains. We could look out of our living room windows and see across the valley below into Pennsylvania. Whenever people make fun of Jersey, I wish they could see how beautiful many parts of the state are.

Oh how cute b. but beware these squirrels like to be the boss. We used to have one live in a tree at the back of our farm house many years ago. Craig was only about three and asked his daddy to help the squirrel whose tail was stuck on a branch. Now big brave dad made a huge ceremony about getting the ladders and how daddy would save the squirrels day. All he got for his attempts was a very nasty bite to his finger and the adoration of his son turned to laughter. x

What a beautiful tail (ooops i meant tale). I just love squirrels. I can sit on my back porch and watch them for hours. There are tall trees at the back of my property and they run up them at high speed and jump from tree to tree chasing each other. They are extremely entertaining. You should bring him to Florida with you he would be quite happy here and one more wouldn't matter to me. My two little dogs run after them, while i laugh at them - like they could EVER catch one.

Hi Tipoague "Nutsy" is such a Character...and he struts around like the Neighborhood is his Domain. I'm so glad you stopped by to read, and that you Enjoyed! Now I'm off to check out your Hubs.

Well, if Truth be told SusieQ, I kinda of like him, and when he hasn't been around for a few days...I kinda of miss him. As for your Peeing Dog (could be a Fun Hub to read) Mmmm, I'd probably Love him too, but have you ever discussed this situation with him? As to Why?

You know SpiderBytes, you are probably right...and by the same Token, he probably guards both bridges to make sure "They" can't cross over. So Glad you Enjoyed.

This is an adorable of "your love for Nutsy!" Now, come on, admit it, you've become quite fond of your little pal. Don't we all, however? I have a little dog who pees on my floor, and although he has this very annoying habit, I still love him. I think to myself, "silly me, it's only pee."

I think Nutsy is encouraging you to write about him. He sounds like a terrific foundation for a children's book or small series on HP. I am glad you shared this. I can just see him giving you "The Tail" as you take off, and pondering up other ways to harrass you when you come back. Great story! I am looking forward to reading more about Nutsy.
