Ode to a Father
What Makes a Father?
I may not
Have had a father
Who’d sit me
On his knee
And tell me
That he’d love
Me for all eternity.
I may not
Have had a father
Who’d keep me
Safe in his arms
Or sing me to sleep
And give me
Butterfly kisses.
How do I know
What a father’s
Supposed to be,
What he’s
Supposed to be like?
He’s the man
I married,
The man
Who makes me smile
When he holds
Our children on his lap
And reads them a story.
He’s the man
Who swings our daughter
High into the air
And rides our son
On his shoulders.
He’s the man
Who causes excited
Screams from little ones
When he waltzes
Through the door.
He’s the man
Who stretches out
His long legs for his babies
To play seesaw.
How do I know
What a father’s
Supposed to be,
What he’s supposed
To be like?
He’s the man
Who comforts me at night,
Whispers sweet nothings
In my ear.
And makes me feel safe
And loved.
How do I know
What a father’s
Supposed to be,
What he’s supposed
To be like?
He’s my man,
My husband,
The love of my life
And he is the perfect
Example of a what
A father is supposed to be.
