Ode to my Sister

Updated on April 30, 2012
My sister and I - always having a blast!
My sister and I - always having a blast!

Another sister tribute...

To my sister on her birthday - Here is a tribute to another sister and the memories of when she was growing up.

When I was young,

A long long time ago,

Along came this baby.

Was she a friend or was she a foe?

She had a pudgy noise, and her hair stuck up wild

When she was awake all she did was poop and cry

Yet those dirty diapers seem so very far away

As those childhood memories just fly by.

Two different worlds, several years apart

I was a teenager, you a young child

My temperament was aggressive

Yours became much more mild

I left home while you stayed where you were

A sister from a distance, miles apart

All those letters you wrote...

That was just the start!

Yet we continued to grow,

Our relationship would bloom

I eventually moved back home,

(Forcing you to have to share your room!)

The years have gone fast,

As I realized who exactly you are

Your a sister close at heart,

Even if the miles are far

Our ages are just numbers

When I'm old you will be too!

Our parents made us sisters,

But our friendship is up to me and you!

So even though we are family,

I'm glad you are who you are

We've shared so many experiences,

(and none of them at a bar!)

We've had game nights and movie nights

And have done nothing at all

You are my sister, my friend

And when we are together, we always have a ball.

So, since you were asking...

I wrote something new

It's my "Ode to My Sister"

And it's dedicated to my crazy sister - That's You!

@John Sarkis - I believe family is very important. When I got married, my mother encouraged me to make sure all my sister's stood up in the wedding. I really wanted my friends. Now I did have a mixture of both, but what I learned is my family is still around, some of the friends took different paths and I lost touch. We all need our family and I am glad to say I am a part of mine! :)

@RTalloni - When I first wrote this, it was actually a sarcastic attempt at sticking my tongue out at her... she was giving me a hard time about not writing in awhile. This was my response. However, we do have a really close relationship and in my family she is one of my biggest supporters of writing. She definitely is someone special! :) Glad you enjoyed this piece. I had fun writing it!

What a wonderful hub barbergirl128. I'm very close to my family. Additionally, my brother has a masters (almost PH.D) in English and has helped and supported me when I got the crazy notion a few years ago of wanting to become a writer...LOL Most people have similar stories about their siblings. I cannot understand people who don't care for their families.

Voted up on your wonderful hub

So sweet to mark your relationship with your sister in this way! The bond you have will continue to grow and triumph in the future, and will become even more of a treasure to you as time goes by.

Aaw this is so so sweet. I always wanted a sister - and guess what...I found out at age 17 that I DO have a sister! Now that I have met her and I have her in my life I don't even stop to think about the things we didn't share (like what you and your sister got) because Im just so happy to have her. Maybe I should follow suit and write a poem to her :)

Thanks... It started off as a joke and ended up taking a serious note. My sister was harrassing me to write something cause she was bored. It gave me inspiration... what can I say! :)

Memories like this can be likened to stars, the ones that are closest to us burn the brightest.

Glad I could bring back some memories for you. It was fun to write. I don't often write poetry too much anymore, but occasionally I have to dust off the poetry pen and get cracking.
