Old Dog

Audrey is a poet, classical singer and voice teacher, recovering attorney and licensed psychotherapist.

You rest next to me,

and dream of squirrels and cats,

of fields full of rabbits.

I take you there sometimes,

to the fields nearby--

to experience your boundless joy.

Your unmasked exuberance

might rub off on me you know—

I hope that in your dreams

you catch that rabbit

and that the field billows before you,

full of promise and possibility

and that you never tire--

But go on running

through the thick scrub,

bounding over it

like you were two again.

And just when you start

to think of me,

I will be there with you,

alongside you,

panting and grinning from the exertion.

Beautiful and very moving poem! While watching my daily companion sleep, the same thoughts has crossed my mind many times. I had him since he was just a playful puppy. Today he does not have the energy. However, in his sleep, his paws are twitching like he is running and he is giving out joyful sounds of excitement. Dreaming of a time now long gone. Audrey, your love and compassion for your dog is so beautiful. Voting up and thank you!

Beautiful. Dogs are the best of friends, it is such a shame that they age much faster than us. However, hopefully they are happy with their lives in comfort and live out their rabbit chasing needs in their dreams lol.

You have captured the essence of dogdom. Peopledom, too. We just want to be out with our dog. We forget, get off track with other distractions and end up in wars. All because we aren't out with our dog.
