On Your Green: A Poem
Introduction
I wrote this poem while observing bees pollinating flowers. The scene was both peaceful and exciting, as if the bees felt this overwhelming joy in their work but kept themselves under control and on task. I felt an such a love for God and nature watching them.
The poem itself can come across a little sexual sounding, and though I didn't strictly intend for there to be sexual undertones, I believe they came out because for bees (and flowers) this is a reproductive act. Much like the Song of Solomon, the poem demonstrates the joy in fulfilling this role.
On Your Green
Sunlight shines on your green
tiny red flowers pop
like freckles in your bunches
bees appear
then disappear
dancing along you
kissing you
gentle
unwieldy
tamed into control
so they can feel the soft caress
from the part of you that crumbles
sipping delicate tastes
before carrying away again
into the dance
you make the bees drunk
with the ecstasy
of bridled passion
their pinnacle of duty
the joy of methodical merriment
the pleasure of serving
their queen.
