And the debt piled up…

A nation founded on the freedoms and rights of man

Rises from ideals and becomes its own land

A Declaration of Independence cast for all to see

Declaring us the home of the brave; land of the free

And the debt piled up…

A nation in which service was an honor to those selected

A place where the freedom and equality were resurrected

A melting pot of people from multiple backgrounds and generations

Coming together in a common focus to form one nation

And the debt piled up…

Arguments over equality, government size, and state’s rights

A Civil War pitting brother against brother in the final fight

A resurrection of those values on which our nation was founded

Pulled thing back together and kept the country grounded

And the debt piled up…

Industrialization, wars, civil rights, assassination, came and went

The nation still survived and continued in its focus and intent

Times of turmoil, times of tears, times of smiles on faces throughout

Taking the good with the bad, never fearing our future route

And the debt piled up…

More wars, dirty politicians, social welfare, and absurd defense

Money spent on frivolous things without purpose or intent

Borrowing from the future to pay for the sins of our past

It was just a matter of time before we asked, “How long can we last?”

And the debt piled up….

Borrowing, borrowing, who is there with money to loan?

America will someday be great but we have to keep adding on

No budget, no plan, no allegiance, and no shame of greed

The politicians came and went only to take the things they need

And the debt piled up…

Spending, spending, crazy spending on things beyond belief

When would the craziness stop; when would sanity be our relief?

Fear not our elected ones say with confidence and intent

It’s not what we saved that matters; it’s only what we’ve spent

And the debt piled up…

Until finally the dream began to unravel with the mountain it became

Soon it was crystal clear; things could not remain the same

Yet the bickering and the arguing was just as vile in content

As each aside cast the ballot for its own political intent

And the debt piled up…

Until there were no longer choices to be made

Markets crashed, people cried, as the lost all they saved

And just when it a leader was needed to bring it to an end

Another dirty politician came to town with only a desire to spend.

And the debt piled up….

@SilentReed...If we are to fix our situation as "a people" are going to have to look beyond our politics and find real solutions to implement. Our situation is too grave to allow politics to finish us off no matter how much the Washington crowd wants it that way. WB

Politicians come and go but the problems still remain or are compounded like interest that keep piling up the debt with wasteful expenditures in the government bureaucracy. It is the flaw in the political and economic structure that need to be address and no amount of window dressing will make the problem go away.As one commentator puts it succinctly "It's like kicking the can down the road" for the next elected leaders to handle. btw,a nice ditty for dirty politicians :)

@Pamela99...That it did and Mr. Obama & Co exercised their civic duty in quickly adding 5 trillion dollars to it. What a shame. WB Thanks for the great rating though! LOL! WB

@WillStarr...Thanks,Will...I try hard to make the point. WB

@drbj...Doc, you understand so much of this so well. I want to challenge you to start writing some hubs in this genre You would be a fantastc voice for conservatism...and don't tell that you don't understand it because I know that you do. You have a responsibility to step up now and share your knowledge with America. How about "Doc interviews a Liberal" to get started, then Doc interviews a "Congressman" and finally followed by Doc interviews a "socialist". We alwayw learn much from your interviews...thisis our chance to learn more and for you to become a voice that you really can be in saving America. Think about it! WB

If we want to see things change for the better in this country, then we the voters must take responsibility by throwing the bums out and voting for new, positive-thinking, untainted (as yet) representatives who possess integrity and common sense.

Great poem, Wayne, voted it up.

@Cardisa...Isn't it strange that while the rest of the world was assigning intelligence to the American public, we were blindly allowing our politicians to throw our future away in the name of greed, power, and child-like behavior. Suckahs! WB are correct. The old guard Republicans and the Tea Party conservatives cannot get along well enough to propose anything. The Republicans won't even try without a majority in the best of times and when they do, they'll give most of the victory away to a bunch of snibbling democrats crying "no fair, no fair" you can't have a majority! A pen full of jackasses have more sense than this entire bunch on their best day. WB

@writer20...Amen to that. I am ashamed of the whole bunch. There's nothing going on in the legislative branch that even is remotely about "the people" is all about what they can do for themselves. I really hope that we have a lot of surprised people in Congress when the voting is over in 2012 and those who are not up for re-election at that time...well, the shock should be overwhelming. Never in my years on this earth have I seen a Congress in this country so inept and dispicable as the most recent. WB

Yup, we are all holding our breaths, lets hope we ALL get over this sooner than later.

And those darn political children (either party)start behaving themselves and act like adults.

Up and awesome WB - yes it is a shame but I think many of us are just holding our breath waiting for change. Who is going to do that? I've heard there's less legislation than ever before going on in the House of Reps than ever before! What are they doing than???

I don't often comment on hubs about American politics but something is bothering me.

What possessed the US President to use tax payers money to bail out such industries as porn - 5 billion dollars. I am sure there are other industries that could have been closed instead of saving and leave the money for a rainy today.

Your president is acting like what we in Jamaica call 'Never see come see'. A kid in the candy jar.

      A nice little ditty

      About something filled with pitty.

      We look our officials

who just give us a shrug

Look at them in their limousines

      smiling and so smug

      When the exit them

we tell them they have lost their way

They just smile, wave, and speak,

"It's not my fault, vote for me again... ok?".

They tell us its ok now

as they fill their pockets with money

But we know that our lives have changed for the worse

and days won't be so sunny

We know what we must do now

we'll kick the bums out on their asses

It won't be a war of words

      or fighting amongst the classes

      So when elections start

don't listen to the fantasies they paint

That isn't the world we live in

I tell you it just ain't

So when it's your turn to vote

      please remember what I've said

Don't vote the rosey picture they paint

      just vote with your head.

We will wave at heir limousines

as they drive out of sight

We'll know right there and then

that we've finally won the fight

Our country will be ours again

We'll elect those who will work for us

The ones we put to work

will do it without a fuss

The sun will will shine on everyone

we'll be able work in freedom and to play

The proud country that once was ours

will now be on the world's display.
