PILES OF DEBT
By: Wayne Brown
And the debt piled up…
A nation founded on the freedoms and rights of man
Rises from ideals and becomes its own land
A Declaration of Independence cast for all to see
Declaring us the home of the brave; land of the free
And the debt piled up…
A nation in which service was an honor to those selected
A place where the freedom and equality were resurrected
A melting pot of people from multiple backgrounds and generations
Coming together in a common focus to form one nation
And the debt piled up…
Arguments over equality, government size, and state’s rights
A Civil War pitting brother against brother in the final fight
A resurrection of those values on which our nation was founded
Pulled thing back together and kept the country grounded
And the debt piled up…
Industrialization, wars, civil rights, assassination, came and went
The nation still survived and continued in its focus and intent
Times of turmoil, times of tears, times of smiles on faces throughout
Taking the good with the bad, never fearing our future route
And the debt piled up…
More wars, dirty politicians, social welfare, and absurd defense
Money spent on frivolous things without purpose or intent
Borrowing from the future to pay for the sins of our past
It was just a matter of time before we asked, “How long can we last?”
And the debt piled up….
Borrowing, borrowing, who is there with money to loan?
America will someday be great but we have to keep adding on
No budget, no plan, no allegiance, and no shame of greed
The politicians came and went only to take the things they need
And the debt piled up…
Spending, spending, crazy spending on things beyond belief
When would the craziness stop; when would sanity be our relief?
Fear not our elected ones say with confidence and intent
It’s not what we saved that matters; it’s only what we’ve spent
And the debt piled up…
Until finally the dream began to unravel with the mountain it became
Soon it was crystal clear; things could not remain the same
Yet the bickering and the arguing was just as vile in content
As each aside cast the ballot for its own political intent
And the debt piled up…
Until there were no longer choices to be made
Markets crashed, people cried, as the lost all they saved
And just when it a leader was needed to bring it to an end
Another dirty politician came to town with only a desire to spend.
And the debt piled up….
