Poem: Sleep

Updated on July 19, 2011

Yesterday I was finally able to Sleep.

I forgot what Sleep was,

It has been far too long.

How do I sleep with Thunder non-stop?

I do not know how I sleep,

But I do know I will Sleep when the constant Thunder is no more.

Yesterday,

Everywhere I looked,

I saw my friends’ faces

All around me,

Scaring me crazy.

Now that I’m asleep,

I no longer see my friends’ faces.

But now I see them in whole,

In the grandest of holy places.

I no longer hear the screams of the tired.

I always wished that my life was the longest of nightmares.

I was right,

I was wrong.

Before I went to Sleep,

Every day I walked the trail to Hell,

But always returned to be tired once more.

But now I am finally asleep,

I can forget the horror around me.

Now I can sleep in a quiet place & sleep forever until,

I am born into Hell once again.

Goodnight dear friends.

Goodnight.

The above, written in 2003, is about a soldier during World War One... his death.

      Epi,

I am speechless. No one has ever said such nice things to me. Really...I can't recall such kind words. You seem to see the good in everyone and everything...that is such a rare gift. You're an amazing person with a few gifts of your own. Your writing is a gift, but your kind spirt is so rare in this crazy world we live in.

...well there is always a lot of intellectual and spiritual depth to your writing - and as I have mentioned to you in a previous comment, you have many superior qualities as a writer, that so many of us would need a lifetime to catch up with you - and perhaps it's that old theory - some people have it and some people don't - you definitely have it and whether it's schooled or from a discipline or just a natural force of nature - it's your gift for the world to see (and read) and our pleasure, entirely.

      Nefarious,

You've made my day. Thank you. My life is stressful now, as with many people these days, and comments like yours are like a rainy day. I say that because I love the rain.

Very powerful. War takes way too many souls. Beautiful and haunting at the same time.
