And so it was

that all came to bid homage

to the Great Google Algorithm.

He, attired in god-like raiment

sat upon throne, radiant,

and ready to pass judgment,

determining those

worthy enough to pass

to continue to limn the Great Google’s presence.

And so they lined the great hall,

steeped in hope,

clad in garb outweighing

the true content of heart, soul and mind.

Gleaming in armor of helmet and mouth-guard

came sports (with 5,080,000,000 hits)

carrying its prized mascot, football (with 1,660,000,000).

Arrayed on all the finery of silkened

position and place,

seven servants came carrying a golden chest

overflowing with money (3,620,000,000 hits)

and the most precious jewelry (1,060,000,000).

And the Algorithm declared that it was good.

Scantily clad,

but nonetheless sexy (2,180,000,000 hits)

politics (1,120,000,000) arrived, bowing low,

and although aware of politics’ lack of substance,

the Algorithm declared that all was good.

Marriage (790,000,000) and shopping (784,000,000)

vied heavily for Algorithm’s attention

piercing pocket books and hearts

with equal abandon during each joust and parry.

And still, the Great Google Algorithm declared that all was good.

Happiness (322,000,000) trailed shopping and marriage,

bowing and smiling as was its wont.

Algorithm was less than pleased

and tapped its fingers upon steel throne.

Happiness’ smile faltered

and yet,

the Great Google allowed it to pass.

Last in line came Poem (175,000,000),

dreamy-eyed,

but containing the conscience of the people of Google.

The Great Google Algorithm arose with shout

and ordered its great and steely guards

to oust Poem.

And so it came to be

that the conscience

of the land lay exiled,

its edges frayed,

its words largely unread,

trampled into dust.

So it was ordered.

So shall it be.
