Poem: Girls Sold, Including Facts & Information about Trafficking for Sexual Exploitation.

Updated on May 22, 2014

Facts About Sexual Exploitation:

  1. Trafficking for sexual exploitation is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Traffickers make an estimate $32 billion yearly.

  2. Experts estimate trafficking for sexual exploitation accounts for 80% of all trafficking.

  3. Girls trafficked for prostitution are as young as 12-14 years of age.

  4. Health risks for victims is premature death: homicide, suicide, drug & alcohol related problems, HIV infection.

  5. Countries ranked high as destination countries of trafficked persons: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Thialand, Turkey & the U.S.

Girls promised an attractive job abroad; never to be seen or heard again!

The purpose of this hub is to create awareness for the hundreds of women and girls who are trafficked daily for the purpose of sexual exploitation. The problem has become an epidemic in the past decade, affecting every region worldwide, crossing all social and economic boundaries.

Traffickers lure women with promises of jobs as nannies, models, and factory workers, instead women are trafficked into prostitution, stripping, including massage parlours that offer a variety of sexual services, including domestic servitude. Victims are prevented from leaving by the use of threats, violence, debt bondage, and withholding documents.

The problem is fueled by poverty, however not in all cases. Many victims are not just runaways or abandoned, but are from good families who got tricked by clever traffickers. The demand is high, which makes it a profitable business for traffickers, unlike drugs, humans can be sold repeatedly. A pimp can buy a women for $10,000 - 500 and make that money back in a week, than everything else is profit.

Countries which score high where women and girls are trafficked from are Belarus, the republic of Maldova, Russia and Ukraine, Albania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, China, Thialand, and Nigeria. These trafficked victims need legal protection. Non-governmental organisations call for arrested trafficking victims to be housed in suitable shelters, not in jail or detention facilities. At present, there are few shelters and limited funds allocated for victims.

What is the answer to child trafficking? YOU. Please raise awareness by lending your voice. Join the fight to end slavery, I have listed below a few organisations which are combating modern-day slavery on the front line. Thankyou.

Girls Sold, Bought, Trapped, A Poem

Dirty criminals reap, buying girls dirt cheap

Profiting thousands in hours, they play upon their fears

To keep them tied at will, vaginal trauma, helpless souls

Forced to toss their parts, to feed the hungry pigs!

Eyes no longer scream for help, they`re stilled by violent threats.

Controlled, hit, burned, cut, raped; using drugs to self-medicate

To numb the brain, elimanate, flashbacks of cruel abuse

Loss of appetite, insomnia, dizzy spells, fear, anxiety!

Deprivation of essential needs, permitted very little sleep

Working round the clock, serving up to thirty blokes a day.

Suicidal thoughts bring hope, to end this horrid nightmare

Sold, re-sold, HIV, PTSD, I beg- pull the trigger

I`m worth everything to you, nothing to myself.

Like flowers without sunlight

their life withers in the dark,

Sun goes down, nolonger rises.

The answer to trafficking is YOU

Lets lend our voice, make some noise

For every girl to shine in freedom!

I have written several articles about sex trafficking. It sickens me and it should sicken all people into action. I have a friend who lost his daughter to this "business" and he is still haunted to this day, ten years later. Keep raising awareness; we need writers like you.

@Suzanna Day, I`m glad to hear you got something out of this hub, yes when I learnt of this crime, I too was surprised about this fact. Bringing awareness is a great way to help as many ppl still do not know this form of exploitation/slavery exists, you could write up something Or share my hub via your social media pages! Thanks

@Rebeccamealey, thanks for stopping by, you know few years ago I felt utterly helpless no clue how I could help this cause, then decided to write poetry in hope to raise awareness,,,,and to my surprise a few of these poems have been set to music and included in an anti-slavery album by Music4Freedom! We may not be able to go out on the frontline, however we can all do something to help, even if it means to share posts from anti-trafficking sites & hubs such as this. Bless you

Lots of useful information here, especially the part about how the victims are not necessarily from desperate situations. I feel strongly about this issue and would ask women the world over to help their own in this war. Voted useful.

What a wonderful hub on an important world wide issue. Love the poem too, it's inspired me to try to write one in the subject myself. I only found your work as we have 24 mutual followers and you were recommended as a Hubber I might like, then I find you are an expat Aussie, all the better. Your hubs look great, can't wait to read more. Voted up and shared.

@FaithReaper Many Thanks, I have posted this poem elsewhere, it`s an intense piece which often leaves readers a little shaken and even disturbed, but we must bring the darkness into the light--- to set captives free....yes please SHARE this hub to raise more awareness! :)

@sgbrown, yes it`s very hard to comprehend such gruesome crimes against innocent girls. You know, a couple of my poems have been set to choral music by a composer for a concert to raise awareness, it`s great to witness so many people coming together in just the last few years to help combat trafficking/modern-day slavery!

This is definitely a growing problem in th world. It's hard for me to understand how some people can do things like this. There does seem to be more awareness of this problem in recent years and I am sure that your bringing this to attention of others will help. Voting this up and more! Thank you for caring about these girls! :)

Love this poem and love your work. I saw a movie a few years ago with Mira Sorvino about human trafficking. It broke my heart. I love how you support for a good cause. :)
