I didn’t want to start another book right away, so I decided to go back to one of the many half-finished short story collections. This time around, I decided to return to a Cup of Normal short story collection by Devon Monk. The story is called Probe.
The story follows a group of people mining a planet by remote control on Earth. As they operate their machines, they do their shifts and chat with each other. They soon learn one of the machines is not a person but is a being operated by something lose. And this thing had hacked into a computer feed on Earth, to warn them this work will lead to a great war. The employees take this news hard and must do something about it.
The good? It’s short, sweet, and very creative. It’s an entertaining and unique tale.
The bad? The introduction is confusing. When reading it the first time it all appears to be its coming from the point of view of the soil. It doesn’t become clear until a ways into the story. So the intro isn’t all that easy to follow.
Overall, it’s a fun little tale. It is by no means a must read, but if you stumble across it, give it a look. It’ll be worth the time.
3 smoothies out of four.
Overall Rating: A Short Sweet Little Scifi Tale.
