Prose - What Sign Do You Live Under?

Updated on July 23, 2011
Source

Can all of life be reduced
To a sign?
Is it a dollar?
Is it yours or is it mine?
Or is it a cross?
The sign of death
The sign of resurrection
Eternal life taking its first breath
Is it a man
With the power of reason
Filtered through perception
Changing every season?
Do you even know?
To whom do you pray?
Or do they pray to you
As you make them obey?
Do you crawl?
Or do they crawl to you?
Begging for mercy
As you would do
How would you describe yourself?
A Machiavellian?
A winner by any means
Even at the cost of heaven
In God we trust
But stuck in the eye of the needle
We extend our hand
Clutching the root of all evil
Unable to shed
Material things
Instead we cling
To gold and diamond rings
What is your sign?
I see it in the fruit you bear
I hear it in your words
I see it in clothes you wear
I see your assumption
Of privilege for yourself
As you take without asking
Adding to your wealth
A dollar sign
Is that your answer?
The cross
Is it your cancer?
It is written
Man cannot live by bread alone
Yet you insist
And refuse to atone
There is a sign
For each of us
Is it a dollar
Or a cross?
You decide
And for you I will pray
But make haste
It could be your last day
Do not take it literally
It's only a question
What is your sign?
I leave you with introspection
Or is the choice
To live under no sign at all?
Only to believe life has no meaning
For we live.... and that is all

@Eiddwen - I've been really slow in acknowledging comments. I'm sorry about that... Thank you. I really appreciate the kinds words...

@Jo - Thank you. It seems odd all the money-grubbing and the Christian Nation culture all balled into one... I guess I'm just sayin'....

@Tony - I can't remember too much that I learned in high school English anyway. It's easier to blame it on typos. Now is that a word? Does it need an apostrophe? See? I'm stumped already.

@Joanie - Woah! Tough crowd! Feel free to edit. Obviously I need the help... :)

Funny how we all relate and do the same stuff. My typing skills never keep up with me, that's why I have to keep editing and checking.

Don't worry we all do it. I usually, having edited till my hands are raw, re-read an hour later and still find mistakes, mispelling and the like. I guess we're all human, as perfect as we'd like to think we are. Take care.

@chanroth - thank you. That is a wonderful response to this hub. I truly appreciate it.

@Tony - Thank you. It's an attempt to get people to think about what drives them each morning when they get out of bed. I have my own struggles. As for the typo I hate it when I do that! I have a friend who usually edits my stuff and she's fired! Ha... not really... You know who you are...

I liked it alot. All pertinent questions unveiling our ineptitudes and misguided ideals. By the way forgot the K in 'know' in line 13. Have a good one.

Wow this is quite a strong and unique piece of writing. I would not know how to answer it. Speechless...
