Reading Journal

I have a vast interest in numerous topics. I write about many different things.

Reading for fun and reading for meaning are two different things. When we read for fun,

we are reading purely for pleasure. We do not care what the work means. We are reading simply because we want to read. We tend to think to ourselves “I don’t think. I just want to enjoy.” (Griffith, 2011)

Literature is important to society because it gives us a gateway escape to another land. It gives us a way to see the lives of others through their eyes, but from the comfort of wherever we chose to read. Being able to use books and different forms of literature to escape to various places is always a good thing. Literature is important to society because it helps writers get their words out there for others to see.

Literature is important to individuals because as I stated above it gives us a gateway to other lands. It allows us to see the views of others with our own eyes. We can enjoy the places, time, and adventures that others have experienced.

For my Journal this week I chose the work called “The Bagel by David Ignatow” This work is very well written. This work is found on page 8 of the text book. It is about a person who has dropped his bagel and is running after it trying to catch it. It is a funny piece when you think about it, because of how the person is chasing the bagel and then suddenly is falling down. The piece also makes a lot of sense if you look at it from a serious perspective, because we are always running after something in this life and yet never really catching up to it.

The way this day and age is the world is turning and changing non-stop without anyone really knowing what tomorrow shall bring. With this work you are basically seeing in writing the way the world has kept us busy in so many ways. When we slow down and actually look around us there have been so many changes that we do not even recognize the world around us.

This poem makes a lot of sense looking at it from many ways. Life will rush by us if we do not slow down. If we keep rushing through it like the person chasing the bagel we will find ourselves tumbling and stumbling along without any way to really stop ourselves. Sometimes it is important to simply slow down and enjoy life. Enjoy what is going on around us. Enjoy our lives, family and everything.
