The Reunion - A Poem

Updated on October 18, 2011

The Reunion

Senior class

Fifty years

Familiar face

Remembered tears

...

“This is Tom”

Shake his hand

Handsome face

Wedding band

...

Rainy night

Long ago

Kissed your lips

Loved you so

...

Later years

Junior Prom

"Cannot go

Promised Tom"

...

Flowers sent

Can you go?

Senior Prom

"Sorry, no"

...

Passing years

Different roads

Separate ways

Heavy loads

...

Fifty years

Slipped away

yet it seems

Like yesterday

...

Greet old friends

Move along

Slap a back

Sing a song

...

Passing glance

Across the floor

Just old friends

Nothing more

...

Lovely still

Little dove

Wish you well

Wish you love

...

Senior class

Fifty years

Familiar face

Goodbye my dear.

Awww...kinda sad though...looking back is fun but it can be just that. I watched a movie the other night where at a re-union an old love was SPARKED once again...kinda sweet, was sweet actually, something that could happen.

How the time slips away, but leaves sweet memories of yesterday...Loved it Thanks for sharing...:O) Hugs G-Ma

Yes, I agree with the other comments here. A simple yet very touching poem. It is sad to think of those who take so much of your heart and all those years it takes to let some finally go.

Up, awesome, and beautiful. It's amazing how seeing someone can shed away the years like a heavy overcoat, and we can experience the same feelings and state of mind that we knew so long ago. I recently had my ten year reunion -- maybe I'm just a pup, as far as you're concerned -- but I know that age doesn't diminish the ability of dormant emotions to come rushing back. This was another great read. Cheers.

This rates up their with a movie called The Notebook, two lovers who grew into each other, parted and yet ended together in the same bed in each others arms, breathing their last breath together, how sweet is that? What a love story. Nicely done Will, rated UP...as awesome

      Hi Will,

Great job! It reminds me of Unanswered Prayer - the song.

I was more or less a loner in High School, but have found new friends at my reunions. It's amazing what you expect of others and more amazing to see that they chose a totally different path.

I loved the beauty and feeling you had in your work. Thank you so much for sharing!

Amazing – your talent to write an entire story with only the keywords!

I love this story. And yes, we romanticize a single smile, or stolen kiss, for fifty years... telling ourselves that we’ve “lost/miss” our true love in life. Then we meet him/her after fifty years just to realize we were never in love with him/her, but with romance and love.

Interesting poem, creating an entire novel in my mind. Well done, WillStarr!

Thanks for your wonderful poem! I worked for years in the development office of my high school. One of my jobs was helping classmates plan reunions. Always bittersweet. Wonderful tales of marriages and babies, but also sad stories of problems and early deaths. And silly, but rumors often flew/grew around those who didn't show.

This poem should be published!!! Just love it.

      Thanks coach!

Coming from someone who writes so beautifully, I consider that quite an honor!

And yes, sometimes the attraction of an old flame was strictly physical beauty, and the years can play hell on physical beauty, so if their personality sucked, they have nothing left.

(Of course, I'm still pretty as ever!) :-)

Its amazing how, as time goes on, certain memories simply never fade.

And how the feelings can arise over and over, no matter the stretch of time.

Back in middle school, I had a 3 year crush on a classmate, and we always remains friends and nothing more. I still remember it like yesterday, and every time I see her, it's like no time has passed...

"Goodbye my dear" at the end makes me feel like it's the last time you will ever see her. Its just a nice poem, and makes me think.

      Hi, Will,

Guess I should have finished the story. No, I tried many times as we grew. She was always "nice" to me, but I never won her over. Right now she's somewhere "out there" but I have no idea. She did set the bar, though, and nobody else has ever gotten past it, unfortunately.

But, again, Will, beautiful poem, and I really liked the photograph at the beginning.

Beautiful poem, Will. It makes my heart ache...although not for anyone in particular in my far past.

It's so sad your "loosely based" lady has gone through so much. Why is it that some people are so tested and tested and put through the wringer, and others just have a seemingly smooth sailin' life? I just don't get it.

The flow of this poem is wonderful. Your words are wonderful. ...and it's an easy read...short, (bitter)sweet and to the point. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us, man with the golden pen!

May peace be in your heart...always,

      Diana

P.S. Thank you so much for the follow. I am privileged and honored. (:

Very memorable Will :) My class recently had their 30th reunion in NY. I didn't fly up for it. No regrets.

I am choking with tears. It is amazing how you pack so much imagery and feelings in those short lines. Crafty!

I learn things about men that I did not know when I was young. Men have real emotions! Men hurt, too.

During my childhood I only saw one man cry--my dad. A car fell on him. I was young and just wanted him to stop crying because men did not cry. It was years later that it dawned on me that he was physically hurt.

      I enjoyed it--the poem.

I missed this one, Will but I can see you have the ability to twist poetry just as you do the tall tales! Good stuff...I'm catching up! WB

A far different style from yours, but yes, I do write a little poetry now and then. Try this:

      Hi Phyllis,

Lost loves are the most remembered, even when they probably would never have survived.
