Sad Love Poems and Poetry

Updated on May 17, 2013

Sad Love Poems

Writing sad love poems is normally not what I do but after thinking about Valentines Day and love, this poem came to me in such a rush that I had to write it down (Isn't it just amazing how that creative process works?) After reflecting on the appearance of a Christmas rose in my backyard (how odd was that??!!) I started thinking about love - how joyful yet how painful it can sometimes be...

Love is not always fair. Love does not always play fair nor is love always this wondrous magical thing that we feel giddy about. Sometimes love is painful - no matter how long you have been married, no matter how long you have loved someone, there is a time when that love is going to hurt. Sometimes the people that we love unleash their thorns on us and that can be especially painful. Not only hurtful but a downright Ouch!

This poem - "The Rose of Pain" is dedicated to all that have loved, been hurt and maybe even hurting today. Maybe we need to get some thorn-less roses in our life. Or maybe we need to stay away from things that look beautiful but hurt us. Or......maybe we just need to cut the thorns off!!

The Rose of Pain...

A beautiful rose with thorns

it pricks

it stabs

it bleeds.

How could something so

hurt me?

How do pain and beauty

exist together?

Oh Beautiful Rose

be careful not to stab the one you love

Withdraw your painful thorns

Cut them off if you must

Let your fragrance and beauty be stronger

than the bite of your needles.

Oh precious rose, precious mate

Prune me if you must

but be kind

For I am a thorn less rose,

and cannot prick back

but only die in my pain.

What beautiful expressions of a broken heart, soul and what timing. May we all put the pain and heartache behind us and move on looking head on into great and happy moments. :) Katie
