Open vast space

Colored by the tracks of time

Carved by ancient waters

Named "Great Sipapu"

By the people of peace

The doorway to the afterlife

Open to spirits both past and present

I dangle my legs over your edge

Gaze at your crevices in awe

Drink in your rich beauty with blue eyes

In your presence I am suspended in time

A gentle breeze blows

Yet all is quiet

A peaceful stillness envelopes me

I close my eyes

Dreaming that I am part of the clouds

Floating over your great mystery

I want to be absorbed into the earth

To become part of you forever

My spirit and your spirit are connected

Show me your wonders

Your secrets I yearn to know

Bring me back to life

And I will live once more.

I grew up walking the hills and mountains of that area. I lived out there for over 50 years and your are right it is very special and sacred. There is something about sitting on the rim of a desert canyon and watching the sun slowly climb over the horizon. As the first rays of the sun caress your face with warmth is a time of spiritual awakening of not only the land but yourself. I hope you get to return many times.

Thank you. This poem is quite special to me and is only a fraction of the emotion I felt when I first put pen to paper. My trip to the western USA was at time of spiritual reawakening for me and I yearn to visit again.

Very good poem that embodies the true meaning of what the word Sipapu is. I liked the way you painted the door to the two worlds with words. Very well done.

Sherrituck, I think that you have achieved your wish in becoming a part of the world that you so well describe. Thanks for this nice work and it is very spiritual. whonu
